I'm looking for someone in San Diego that owns a T61p with the 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) LCD panel made by LG, so that I can compare my Samsung LCD panel with it side-by-side, and take some pictures of them together for everyone else to use to compare as well. This post tells how to see who made your LCD panel. I'm willing to drive to you, on your schedule, or to meet up somewhere (preferable). Just send me a PM if you're willing!

where in San Diego are you? I attend school at UCSD and I'd be willing to compare my T61p - 15.4"WSXGA+ LG LCD with your Samsung LCD.

Cool! I live downtown in the Gaslamp district (you're welcome to stop by here, we could do all these tests in an Irish pub a block away :) ), but it wouldn't be hard for me to come out to UCSD, either. Ideally, I'd like to take some pictures in a relatively low light environment, calibrating the display and using some test images from this site: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/. I expect calibrating the display would take about 5-10 minutes, and taking pictures would take about 10-15 minutes. Having a dark room would help accurately measure the contrast ratio of the displays ( http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/contrast-ratio.html), which would be nice, but not necessary. I'll send you a PM with my email address and phone number, just let me know what works for you. Thanks a ton!

Doooon't do it! It's all part of Fignuts evil masterplan to take over your Thinkpad and eventually every LG Thinkpad in the world. Before you know it you're wondering why your lcd says Samsung instead of LG :D

Muahaha, you've found out my devious plan! Yes, you might not want to leave me alone with your laptop for the hour it would take me to swap our LCD panels. ;)

It looks like wuzer and I are going to meet up on Saturday to compare our laptops and take some pictures of the displays...I'll upload the results here soon after!

Cool can't wait to see the pics. I've taken pics of lcd screens before and it's not as trivial as it looks.

While you're at it how about doing the pint-o-Guinness-on-the-keyboard test ? ;)

    Looking forward to the comparision!

On a side note, I just received my T61p and it shipped with a Samsung display. Overall, it's actually not that bad of a display, especially compared to some I've seen before and while there is no "sparkle" as some might wonder, it *is* grainier than my LG but it's not due to the surface coating. It's likely due to the filters that Samsung uses internally on the panel.

Anyway, I've been comparing it to my T60 with the LG, and lets just say there was enough of a difference for me to spend some time cracking them both open and swapping the displays. Currently typing on the T61p with the LG, now I just need to swap the keyboard for a spare NMB I have sitting around. :D

Also, once I have the T60 reassembled with the Samsung, I can probably do a few comparisions or pics if you guys would like (although I'm not promising terribly good photos, I suck with still cams :p).

Nice post, Ultracow (great alias too). I think we'd all be interested in seeing whatever side-by-side comparison pictures you can show us (I certainly would). Your description of your Samsung panel is very useful, because it sounds similar to how I think of mine, and you don't seem to go overboard in focusing on its flaws. Yes, my Samsung is a decent, totally useable panel. The graininess and light leakage are there, but not oppressive. But if I had the option of swapping it out for a noticeably nicer panel, I sure would. If the LG panel is the same 15.4" WSXGA+ panel that also ships with the T61p, hopefully you'll post your pictures in this thread, which is the thread I created this thread for. :)
