I am trying to upgrade the HDD in my coming soon X220 tablet. I read that it can only accept 7mm drives. I also read that the intel 320 has a 9mm housing on a 7 mm drive but it is Sata 2 not Sata 3. AFAIK, X220 tablet 2nd gen i5 processor supports Sata3.

We have talked about this before. The 9.5mm SSD will work fine in your machine, but you have to remove the keyboard in order to put the 9.5mm SSD inside. But once inside, it will work perfect. I bought a OCZ Agility 3, it works perfect on my ThinkPad X220.

Get a crucial M4. Just remove the plastic spacer on the SSD and tada, it's now 7mm

It even fits inside the original caddy. The protective rubber fits too.

Does the OCZ Agility 3 has 7mm drive when removing the housing? Are there any risks by removing the housing on the drive (i.e. exposing electrical interference)?

What difference will it make when I remove the keyboard? I prefer to use the original caddy to minimize any electrical interference to internal components, or am I mistaken?

Just to confirm, the crucial M4 Sata 3 will fit just like the intel 320 Sata 2 drive? This will be perfect :D

Is there any good new updates regarding the mSata drive as well? I couldn't find any of the new drives to be used. Please help if you have any tip.

    Yes it will fit.

Crucial M4 is probably the fastest SSD you can put in a X220 without taking out the keyboard / opening up the laptop.

Also, the M4 does NOT have any stickers that say "warranty void if removed"

I'd still test the SSD in a desktop PC first.

Just a note: When I put the M4 in the original harddrive tray, only 2 of the 4 screws were able to fit. This is not a problem though. The 2 rubber pieces fit around it perfectly.

I did not even get new screws for the SSD. The original tray/caddy keeps it secure.

You don't need to remove the housing, the space in the X220 will fit a 9.5mm drive. But it's a little bit tricky to put a 9.5mm drive inside (i.e. in order to put the 9.5mm drive inside, you have to remove the keyboard first). Once the SSD inside, you can put the keyboard back on.

Just so I'm clear, an unmodified 9.5mm drive will fit but I have to remove the keyboard?

Does that include the keyboard bezel? Or just the keyboard itself?

Be careful when you try to stick a 9 mm ssd into the slot. You may destroy the SATA port...That happens...

I've got my eye on the 256GB version of that drive. Supposed to be out now, but I can't find anyone selling them! Anybody actually find one of these?

My budget's the $400 I saved by not ordering the Intel drive from Lenovo. Hopefully, I'll still be in the right ballpark.

It should work fine. Mine rocks!
I trust you wrapped it with tape to protect it from shorting inside the X220.

Lots of support on the Crucial user forums.

Wrapped it in tape? Why? I thought when you took the plastic spacer out and used shorter screws any other modification would be unnecessary.

Without the spacer some of the components on the board can short out to the case. It's happened to others - read some of the threads on this.

another question, becouse i am confused. i am lookiing around the web, and i found opposites about the E420.

    1. i am wondering if it has got Sata 3 or not. becuse in some rewiew there was written it has, another rewiev says no. or it is in the E420s.
    2. i can put there 9.5mm SSD disk to replace it or just 7mm?
    3. does the E320 has a Sata 3 or not
    4. i can put there 9.5mm SSD disk to replace it or just 7mm?

i am asking it twice, because i cannot deside between them. wich one to buy ( with i5, 4GB ram, 6630m) and then upgrade the HDD with Crucial M4

    Ty for answers

I would look at a mSATA drive. It plugs into the miniPCI slot and acts like a hard drive. Then you can keep a platter based drive for storage.
