    Hello all,

I've been lurking here for a bit, and I decided to finally post. I'm thinking of purchasing the y580, and I was wondering if there was anyone who was traveling with the y580 a lot (say, a college student who throws it in their bag).

If so, can anyone give their experience with it? Would it stand constant use like that? Should I buy an extra padded backpack for it, or just consider another laptop?

I'd buy a padded backpack for any laptop you have, just for good measure. I'm using this for school, it's a good size for a laptop. It's a pound heavier than a MacBook Pro or most other 15-inchers, thin ultrabooks aside. A pound or two isn't a huge difference. It looks like it will hold up well if you treat it well, I'm going to use it for college as well.

I mean, I have a backpack with a laptop pocket and all, but I was just wondering if that was enough to protect it (I've been told the case is quite sensitive).

I bought an extra laptop sleeve (16" one) for my laptop even though I was already carrying it in a Belkin laptop backpack. The sleeve does a nice job protecting the laptop from a few bumps and also from the elements. I live in a hot place and I throw my laptop bag into a storage crate in the truck of my car when I head out to class. The bag gets pretty warm, but the laptop is still cool to the touch when removing it from the sleeve after a 45min commute.

The two y580s we have move around a lot but never into a backpack or out of the house. I like ssri's suggestion since I would want extra protection for the screen.

I bought this at Marshalls Amazon.com: SwissGear SA9360 Backpack (Black): Electronics
I like it because is not too big or too small, for me is a perfect fit and protect the laptop just fine. I carry it on a daily basis from home to office. The laptop compartment has its own space appart from the books/notebooks compartment. And I can have my laptop + 3in binder, and still have room for a notebook or papers.. For me is sweeeeet.

I guess that as long as you don't "throw it" and take good care/handling with it you'll be fine.

I'm using my y580 as my only computer for college. I have an old (8 years) backpack with a padded laptop compartment that is working very well so far. I do not yet have a separate laptop sleeve but when I come across one that fits perfectly I will buy it. I have to say that so far I don't have any complaints commuting daily with it. Depending on how long I expect to be on campus the battery will last plenty long enough for tasks in between class. Since I carry several large textbooks anyway the extra weight of the Y580 makes little difference to me.

I would say the build quality of the Y580 is satisfactory. Some have rated it "excellent" but it's hard to use that term if you compare this laptop to a MacBook Pro or any other with a metal unibody. However, my Y580 is sturdy, but with slight flex on the upper left of the keyboard (this does not bother me), and flex in the middle of the panel behind the screen. I also notice some flex under the optical drive when I pull the laptop out of my bag. I do not expect any of these areas to present a problem, especially when the computer is in my bag and pressure from books and my back is evenly distributed across the entire case. These areas are not an issue when using the laptop normally.

Overall, I feel comfortable taking this computer to and from class every day. Remember that it's a $1215 (that was my price with 3 year warranty and accidental damage coverage) mainstream computer, treat it carefully, and I think it will hold up just fine.

As for protecting the screen, I make sure nowadays that I use the screen "cloth" that came with the Y580 whenever I bundling the laptop into its sleeve and then into a laptop bag. I treated my 6910p pretty casually and I know the Y580's sturdiness/build quality is not on par to that business laptop.
