I just got a new T420 and all was well, but after updating Windows 7 (64-bit) and installing other recommended updates, it plays the Device Disconnect sound after startup. It seems to happen once everything is loaded, maybe about a minute from the time you see the desktop.

I can't be 100% certain that it only started after the update. Also, I should point out that I have a fingerprint reader and a USB mouse. I tried disconnecting the USB mouse and disabling "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" for the fingerprint reader, but still no luck. Please help! This is driving me crazy! :(

Nates have you checked event viewer or device manager for any related issues?

I checked out Event Viewer but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. Here are some of the items under Administrative Events:

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

Microsoft Antimalware Real-Time Protection feature has encountered an error and failed.
    Feature: Behavior Monitoring
    Error Code: 0x80004005
    Error description: Unspecified error
Reason: The filter driver requires an up-to-date engine in order to function. You must install the latest definition updates in order to enable real-time protection.

The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device USB\VID_147E&PID_2016\6&31ad0206&0&3.

WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped.

    WLAN Extensibility Module has stopped.

I went through Device Manager and it seems like everything is working properly. I even updated the drivers for Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection but I'm still having the same problem.

In the past I've used a program called ' Snarl' for showing notifications. It's sort of like the equivalent Growl program for MacOS. Snarl has the ability to pop-up notifications for device events. This might be a useful way to actually see what's causing the problem.

Thanks! I gave it a shot but unfortunately it didn't catch the culprit.

check if the sound occurs especially when you change between AC and battery power. the computer turns off your DVD drive to save power on battery power on default.

After putting the computer to sleep and then waking it up almost immediately, it played the Device Connect sound at the login screen. After logging in, it played the Device Disconnect sound.

bleesan, I'll give it a try and report back.

Here's a thought, change the sound. Make sure it's actually a device sound. The Sound control panel has several selections for a Device. There's the off chance it's not actually a device making the noise but some other program that happens to use the same alert sound. Not likely, but you never know.

It's most likely your optical drive disabling automatically to save power. Open up Power Manager, make sure you're in Advanced mode, and then under the "System settings" dropdown disable "Automatic optical drive power off," if you so choose. Personally, I have it enabled for both battery and on AC.

Is it Bluetooth? There was a thing where the Bluetooth would cause a noise on startup.
