I feel kind of like I did when I bought a BMW M Roadster and then found out it had no spare tire.

I went thru the Lenovo.com list of options and checked off and paid for the 1GB Turbo Memory (I didn't realize that it only worked with Vista until reading the forum threads).

But, now I am looking thru all my system specs.....and I can not find any hint of the 1GB Turbo memory. Can someone tell me how to confirm I actually have it on my system?

One of the recent system updates from lenovo.com had an error removal for the hardware device manager associated with the Turbo memory on an XP o/s....but I do not have the error.....so wonder if it was ever installed.

Hey...I would either like to find the darn thing .... or get my money back....or both.

    Any inputs would be appreciated.

You could open up your T61P if you have XP since it is on a mini card in your T61P.

thanks for your input.....and will do that if there is no software check/confirmation that the turbo memory is in the system.

    physically, where is it located?

    thanks

Under the palm rest on the right hand side. Next to the wireless mini pci card.

Hmmm... I am using Turbo Mem under Vista. Both PCWizard, and PCDoctor5 detect it only through the installed drivers as a second HD. It was not detected as memory anywhere. I wonder if that is because I have the drivers installed? Have you tried either of these hardware probes?

    bsodder,

No. Nothing showing for either physical memory or under the hard drive.....for either PC Doctor or PC Wizard.

Maybe it shows up only for Vista? Nothing shows up for XP?

XP cannot detect it. You'll have to physcially look.

    To quote Lenovo:

Microsoft Windows XP/2000 operating systems do not support Intel Turbo Memory. If you are using Windows XP/2000, there will be a Yellow Exclamation (!) shown in Device Manager.

You can eliminate the ! using this driver.

thanks for all the feedback. there is no exclamation mark (and, i haven't used the driver or Lenovo system update fix).....that was one reason I wondered whether I actually had the turbo memory.

this pc is so pristine...I hate to take the thing apart to look for something I can't use.....lol....but I will have to do that to satisfy the cat's curiosity.

If you have Turbo Memory in Windows XP, it will show up as an "Unidentified Device" with a yellow question mark, or if you installed their "Turbo Memory Disable Driver for XP", it will show up in System Devices as something like "Reserved for Future Use".

My laptop (7664-16U) has Turbo Memory, but I'm running XP since it's so much faster. I'm wondering if I should just sell my Turbo Memory :)

    michael,

Hey thanks....for that very specific info. But, no, there is no question mark in my hardware device manager list.

I may have to crack this case open .... to see if that sucker is there.

But, the lenovo system update showed me that I should download the Turbo driver (shows as an optional download/fix)....which I think kinda means the Turbo is there....so maybe I should do that and see if I get the "Future use" note.

And, yes, so glad I also finally decided to go with XP for the speed. I hesitated over that decision before going with XP.....now i am very glad I made that decision.

    Thanks again,

    alacrity

go to this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=175666 It has a lot of feedback from users.

For me, I took off the palm rest and could only see p/n 42w2031 which was a metal magnesium "box" which had "stuff" inside it but couldn't get to it or see what was inside....didn't want to disect my T61p any further for the moment. The metal box was pretty well connected to the rest of the PC.

But, even though I had no yellow exclamation mark in the device manager, I did download and install the Lenovo "fix" Disabling tool for Turbo Memory. Then, I went back to the device manager and did find under system devices the "Intel Hardware reserved for future use" so maybe there is some Turbo hardware actually inside this PC?

So, the mystery continues.....I can not tell if I actually have a turbo memory inside my PC or not.

Maybe I will run Vista under VMware and see if it picks up the Turbo.

    Is this fun or what?

Vista on VMware won't find the Turbo Memory. If System Updater found the Turbo Memory, and you have the "reserved for future use", you can be pretty sure that you do indeed have Turbo Memory.

so, how does vista detect turbo memory? does it show up in the device manager? if it doesn't how can you ensure that you have turbo memory without having to open up your laptop?

It shows up in device manager as a second HD drive. When you look at 'Properties" there is a line that contains 'Intel Robson".

it's there...it is just a piece of hd...xp can't recognize it..so you will have to manually open it up to see if is there...

OR..just check ure FRU list and it should show up on there

Hi, I saw your posting and would like your help. Lenovo has treated me very poorly. I bought a Laptop from their web site, a T61p, 15 inch wide screen. When I bought it the web site had an option to buy XP Laptops with Turbo Memory. I also called Lenovo and they assured me that even though Turbo Memory was for Vista, there was a patch that I could download to make it work with XP Pro.

Also, desktop screen saver and back ground programs like Webshots Desktop do not display properly on the wide screen. Wish I could get it to stretch and properly display.

I live in Japan. I got my computer, of course it did not work. I had to reformat the hard drive just to work on the thing.

There is an IBM center close to me. The machine is under warranty, but Lenovo refused to give me an RMA number, or ship the thing back to them, or to take care of me and fix the problem. I have all of the emails from management. I disputed the charges on my Master Card and had them removed. So the machine is just sitting here now.

I was fraudulently induced to by the machine by Lenovo because I wanted a Windows XP Pro machine and Turbo Memory or Solid State hybred HDD machine. They also violated federal warranty / guaranty laws by refusing to take care of the problem they caused.

What can you suggest? Is there someway to use this machine? Can I get it to work with or without the turbo memory and also the desktop to display properly?

    Thank you,
    Paul

    Hi hiyaoroshi,

Even though I have XP Pro and Turbo Memory, my system (T61p) works great. The only non working part is the Turbo memory....but it doesn't affect the rest of the PC at all.

I am not sure what you mean or what is happening with your desktop and widescreen problems.....I don't see those issues. You might try to restore n recover the original system.

I am keeping (guess i have no choice) the Turbo memory for the time that I ever upgrade to Vista. On the threads on this forum, the Turbo Memory doesn't seem to work all that well anyway with Vista....do I have just mentally written it off.

Try a re-install, forget the Turbo memory, and enjoy your new magnesium roll bar PC.

    All the best,

    Alacrity :)
