I got an X230 as a present with a TN screen. Does anyone know if its possible to upgrade to an IPS screen after market?

It will void your warranty, but it is replaceable with no other issues. See the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the X230 here to get step-by-step directions on how you can do so.

There was a couple threads in Dell forums where a user upgraded a Dell Latitude E6220 with the X220 12.5" IPS screen, was a drop in upgrade. Of course as MidnightSun pointed out, it WILL void your warranty. It maybe easier to sell your X230 and order one with the IPS screen. ThinkPads are also quite a pain to change the screen on. Good luck.

Not in the way changing the tube on a CFFL LCD is. You just have to be patient on not rush it, particularly on the X series where things are packed more tightly.
