I am getting the T61 but I ordered it with the CDRWDVDROM combo drive. I know that the drive is removable. I want to buy a DVDRW drive after market. What ones can I get, where and is it better to buy the Lenovo offered one or an aftermarket one?

I believe the most commonly found DVD burner for the T61 is the UJ-852. You can search for it on eBay.

Since the drive is 9.5mm in height (nonstandard), most aftermarket drives won't fit. In addition, Lenovo has it so that the drive bezels are not fully rectangular, so even if you did find a 9.5mm drive, you'd have to make sure the bezel would fit.

One more thing: the Ultrabay Slim bay in the T6x series features a proprietary interface connector so not even just any 9.5mm high optical drive will fit.

So from what you guys are saying, it looks like the drive and the interface are very proprietary. Not like I can just swap it out like ram or the hardrive? I checked that model# on ebay. People are selling it for $150  It is a damn DVRW drive that should cost about $15 in this day and age. I already see Blue Ray quite often now.

So it is probably best to get it from Lenovo when the machine is configured? Looks like that will give me the best price and it is guaranteed to work???

    In short, yes.
