    Hi everyone,

I plan to buy a T60 before the holydays.

Suppose i want a 7200rpm hdd with my laptop

On the lenovo website, i can add a 'Additional Hard Drive', the laptop i want already come with a 80gb 5400rpm hdd, my question is the following:

if i add the 7200rpm harddrive, does they my system come with the 5400rpm AND 7200rpm hdd or do they just 'upgrade' it ?

    thanks !

Just this bit : Do not opt' for a 7200rpm hdd unless you need it...
It consumes more power than a 5400rpm hdd.

It should be just an upgrade. Most notebooks (and all notebooks smaller than 17") do not support two hard drives.

However, 7200RPM drives use about the same amount of power. While it does consume more power while reading or writing files, it does so faster. Thus, it is working for a lesser amount of time. Ultimately, it uses more power but for less time...so the net amount used is about the same. The only time that is not the case is when doing long HDD intensive tasks (de-fragmenting and virus scans).

Even then, the difference amounts to only a few minutes of battery life. However, you will notice a significant speed increase when booting up or opening programs. This is because the drive takes less time to find and read the files.

Actually, the 7200 doesn't really use noticeably more battery...maybe 2-5 minutes.

They are probably referring to the modular hard drive. You can add a second hard drive to your system in place of the optical drive. I have the Seagte 100GB 7200.1/ It performs very well and is near silent.

Not true, I run two hard drives in my 14.1" T41p using the ultra bay hard drive adapter.

You will be able to use two different hard drives at the same time. One is the standard hard disk, the other will go in your modular bay (usually holds a dvd drive or battery) You will need a special bracket to put the disk in the ultrabay.

The 7200 rpm 100gb drive is about $100 to upgrade from the 80mb 5400 rpm drive. You get the option to upgrade when you configure the machine. If the website says you are adding an additional drive that sounds like buying two drives to me.
