    Hey guys, first post so here we go!

    I ordered a Y580 from newegg last night with the 1920x1080 screen, which meant I could only opt for the 5400rpm 1TB hard drive with no mSATA (unless I wanted to wait a week or two, which I can't really do).

    So I also ordered the 60GB mSATA SSD linked below. How do I set this up as the boot/OS drive, and how do I move programs that I use frequently over to the SSD when I get it installed? The stuff will arrive at my door tomorrow.

    Thanks!

    Hi carpenj;

    There's no link. Anyways Hlight85 posted in the Y580 owners thread on how to do a fresh install. The post is in page 69. Sorry don't know how to make a link. Is slightly different bc he's switching his HDD for a SSD, in your case (which will be mine in a far future) is adding a mSSD. But the concept is the same, mSSD as main drive and HDD as storage.

    I recommend you to backup everything and DO NOT delete the partition with the drivers and stuff.

    What about backing it up to an externdrive?

    I think if you remove the partition with the drivers you will lose the one key recovery function. So is better to leave that partition intact.

    I deleted my drivers partition, no biggy. I burned the drivers to a DVD before hand.

    Can you guys explain to me why my 1TB hard drive appears to be divided up into two parts, one roughly 880GB and one roughly 25GB? They register as two individual drives, drives C and D. This confused me a bit when I was looking at everything last night.

    The upgrade was put on hold until I can find a place that carries the little screw that secures the mSATA drive, however, since neither the laptop nor the SSD came with one.

    Hi carpenj;

    That's what is called a partition. You only have one physical hard drive disk (HDD), which is your 1TB HDD. By default, Lenovo installs the OS in the C drive, and then creates a partition (D) for the drivers and other stuff. So both the C and the D are located in the same physical hard drive.

    You can copy the D partition to an external drive if you don't want to have your 1TB physical drive divided in different partitions. However if you delete this partition, the "OneButton Recovery Tool" may not work properly, because it will try to find the deleted D partition to make the restoration.

    At least that's what i think... Maybe someone else can give you a better explanation. Hope this one helps :)

    Yeah, those are probably just partition. But I'm really interested why the hell there is only 25GB on C? I mean...Windows...it needs a lot more on C to work properly. for example 64bit version needs at least 30GB to work properly from what I remember (windows itself + swap + free space for updates). Is this true that Y580 with OS pre-installed has OS on 25GB partition?

    Laptops without the mSSD (like mine) has the OS on the main partition (C), the other partition (Lenovo D :) is 25GB big, but only has like 4GB of files, so you have like 21GB free.

    I could use a 256gb SSD drive. Whats a reliable brand for use as the main storage drive? The best one, i know they get old and slow over time but so i want the best.
