I'm planning on purchasing an IBM ThinkPad X40 in the next few months. I am wondering if I should just go with the base prices and add in my own components, or if I should just pay IBM to add it for me. Mainly, I'm thinking about the RAM. 256MB PC2700 CL2.5 DDR SDRAM SODIMM costs $125 to add; would this be cheaper from an online retailer? Or is it something that's difficult to add to a laptop? I built my own desktop and know a lot about hardware but I've never worked with a laptop.
Also, anyone have experience with the batteries? Which should I get?

Buy your ram afterwards, it is even easier to upgrade than a desktops memory, usually there is a panel on the reverse side that is held in by a screw. Just remove the screw and panel and pop in more.

You only get one slot in that machine. At Crucial the 512MB goes for $117, the 1GB for $450. So, in this rare instance they're only charging you $125 for the upgrade, so it's probably best to stay with IBM. This would not hold true if you had multiple slots though.
