I just purchased a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 Hard Drive, but it probably doesn't have the G-Force Protection drop sensor (Seagate feature) that stops the hard drive when motion is detected. The Thinkpad Active Protection System doesn't need the hard drive to have this feature to work, right? It is my eduated guess that the accelerometer in the Thinkpad operates independently of the hard drive and the hard drive would simply be stopped by the computer rather than stop by itself like it would have with the G-Force Protection feature.

    Could anyone confirm this?

Better yet, my T61 has the Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 right now. Does that drive have any hardware features that involve drive suspesion in case of shock?

Correct, APS is implemented on the motherboard, not the hard drive.

I always wondered what would happen if APS was used with G-Force. Would they conflict?

I know Seagate offers 2 version of the same 7200.2 series drive one with G-Force and one without. Perhaps they were worried about conflicts as well.

My opinion would be to get the seagate without G-force and let APS do it's job. You'll avoid conflicts and you'll be able to control APS where you don't get to control G-force.
