I keep seeing posts on the forum saying that you need the Active Protection Lenovo software for hdd active protection to work.... but I see nothing of the sort on lenovo's site. Is it actually dependent on the software, or does the software just let you turn it off/change settings?

I believe it is software controlled as it uses the signals from the accelerometer to detect jerks or drops. The software thus locks the drives' heads. For this reason users have also used the same device to make "anti-theft" software, based on what the accelerometer sends to the software and sounds an alarm.
That's only my 2c though. -
does not work without the software
