I am about to pull the trigger on a T420. I am planning to buy the lowest-end model for $674.10 + tax. (I plan to upgrade the RAM and WWAN card myself.)

    A few questions:

    1. Since I am buying the base model without any special modifications, how long would it take to ship?
    2. What type of WWAN card does Lenovo use? (It says Thinkpad b/g/n or something like that.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. I'm not sure, but I'd imagine still around 3 ~ 5 days. I believe Lenovo likes to ship on Fridays anyways.

    2. That's not a WWAN card, it is a WLAN card. It is a generic Realtek card (check T420 spec sheets).

And, one last point, $674.10 is kind of high for the base model. I think around $650-ish would be more reasonable (if not, even lower like $600-ish). Try to see if you can find at least a 15% off coupon or something. With a 15% off coupon, it would be $636.65 (the T420 starts at $749 in the US, right?).

I've searched for additional coupons. There doesn't seem to be any, except for the 10% off one that is there right now.

Might I get a better deal if I speak with a live assistant?

Probably not, but it can't hurt to try.

I'd also recommend you get the cheapest Intel WLAN card instead of the Realtek one. Realtek hardware generally sucks.

Thanks. Yeah, I know RealTek isn't very good. I plan to buy an Intel card on Newegg.

EDIT: The Intel Centrino 1000 is free? I'll take it and I may upgrade it to a better card if I find its range lacking.

Ah. Figured it out. Save me a bundle, thanks.

A T420 for $610... Not bad. Still need to upgrade the RAM later, though.
