My T400 has the Ericsson F507g. I have ATT cell service and I put my 3g sim card into my T400. I would like to connect to the net, but I am not having any luck. This is what I have done:

Network connections and clicked on "wireless managerRasConnection" From there you must enter a username and password and then dial a number.

From what I could gather from some google searches, I entered [email protected] as username and cingular1 as the password (I tried all caps and not all caps). The dial number in the connection manager is "*99***1#" so I used that number.

I do not have a tethering plan so I would rather not call ATT for assistance. I dont plan on doing alot of surfing on the computer, and I know that ATT can charge you for computer surfing if you dont have the proper plan. However, I do want to know how to set this up if I am ever need of using my computer with the sim card from my phone?

Some step by step directions would be great.

    THanks

The device (Ericsson F507g or what ever) needs to be activated and registered with the network...so somehow you need to register, maybe call ATT and do a trial and stop after 1 month. After that, at least in theory, you should be able to connect by inserting the sim into it...albeit not at the 3g if you don't have 3g on your current cellphone account.

I have 3g on my cell account.

Why does it need to be registered? Does it not work like any other ATT phone, where you basically insert the sim card and it works. The account is on the SIM card not on the phone or wireless device?

Are you using Access Connections or the built in Vista networking tools?

To the best of my knowledge Windows does NOT natively support WWAN cards. Therefore you will need to use a third party program (e.g. Access Connections) to use the card.

I would suggest just putting the SIM card in the laptop. Open Access Connections, create a new WWAN/dial up connection, and connect (use the default number and NO username/password).

Well, maybe I was wrong. Anyway, here's a screen shot of my configuration. Maybe it can help. [IMG][/IMG]

I am not using access connections anymore. I did a clean V64 install. Through Vista network connections it looks like Vista supports it, but I am not sure.

F4ding, I am not sure you are wrong. I just question, why the sim card or the wireless card would need to be registered. MOre research on google further indicated that most of the wireless cards are "unlocked".

I am gonna try tethering to the phone.....hopefully I can get that to work (will probably be easier too, since I wouldn't have to play musical sim cards). But I would still like to figure out how to use it with the sim inserted into wireless card.

Try installing Access Connections and see if it works that way. You can always uninstall it later. WWAN SHOULD work with a SIM pulled from a GSM smartphone.

jonlumpklin, I think it will work w/out access connections, I just think I have some setting wrong or pswd or username...or something?

It appears to "dial" and it appears to try and log in, but then it is rejected with an error. I will have to write down the error next time I try it.

I don't think you need to use any username/password.

I have used a Sprint EVDO modem (34mm expresscard Merlin EX720) on my x200. I simply created a manual dial up connection in Access Connections and used it. I used the default number and NO USERNAME/PASSWORD and it worked flawlessly. The method may be different for GSM SIM cards, but I would try it w/o a password.

I agree with jonlumpkin. As you can see from my config screenshot, I don't have any username/password. I'm not sure what connection software included with the thinkpad, but I have Dell mobile broadband software. I can also connect using Windows Dial-up.

i think lenovo just released a thinkvantage "mobile broadband connect" program, hopefully this can avoid having to install access connections.

I havent tried to connect again using the sim card in the Ericsson card. I did try connecting using Blackberry Bold as a tether. It works like a charm. At this point I am not sure I see any good reason to use the sim card if tethering is this easy. Unless of course ATT can see tethering whereas they can't "see" if my sim is placed into the computer. For some reason, even though I have unlimited internet for the blackberry att still wants more money if you want to tether to a computer or you want to put the sim card into a wireless card. I suppose it is b/c they assume you will use more bandwidth per month if you are using a laptop. I dont plan on using the tether very often, so hopefully it wont be an issue for me.

FWIW to tether with a BB, I used these instructions: http://blackberryfaq.com/index.php/Using_BlackBerry_As_Modem
