My school website is showing three system graphics options in a T500:

ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 with 512MB VRAM
    Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
ATI Mobility Radeon 3650 with 256MB

What's the difference between the FireGL V5700 and the Radeon 3650?

The pricing would lead one to believe that the FireGL is by far the worst of the three. Is this the case?

The performance specs for the ATI cards on http://www.notebookcheck.net are the same but there are no 3DMark specs for the v5700.

The V5700 is approximately the same card as the Radeon 3650 I believe... performance differences should be marginal, with the FireGL doing better in 2D work and the Radeon doing better in 3D work..

Hardware wise they are identical. The V5700 has OpenGl features enabled that the 3650 don't. Gaming wise the 3650 will be faster due to a newer version of the catalyst control center.

EDIT: @Hep!...unfortunately that is not true. FireGL cards are aim at OpenGl based apps (which are usually CAD apps). Maybe you were thinking of Quadro NVS and FX cards.

So for general web surfing and watching videos I should be fine with V5700, no?

    Uhmm.. that's a resounding yes.

Btw, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD is by far the worst, performance-wise.

No. If you are not going to be doing anything 3D...(gaming/CAD etc) then go with the X4500.

The V5700 is a professional version of the 3650 (where the 3650 is a gaming version of the V5700).

Not exactly true, HD 3650 merely breaks the 4000 mark in 3Dmark06, FireGL almost makes it 5000. I believe the FireGL is higher clock.

Yah that sounds about on par as the HD3670 which is same as the 3650 but with higher clocks speed.

As an owner of the W500 with it in my possession, I noted in a previous post that the V5700 shows up as a 3650 with GPU-z with exact same clock speeds and other specifications with the exception of 512mb of ram instead of 256. I ran 3DMark06 and got about 30 points lower than Kevin did on his T500 with identical settings. I am not sure if the decrease is due to specific drivers for the "V5700" as they call it, or because of background processes from the factory Vista install.

Yeah sorry I thought the FireGL was aimed at 2D just like the Quadros.

I am going to use a laptop for 3d work, but do also want to play games like CoD4 and Crysis if these cards can manage that. So, which of these two cards should I get? Of course, the 3650 will do fine at light-med 3d work, but I read in another thread, that if the drivers for a FireGL/Quadro was well-developed, it could easily beat the gamer card in games, as well as 3d work (Quadro M570? vs 8600M GT).

    Whats the case here?

I'd got for the V5700 in that case.
