An employee moving away recently turned in a T40 issued to him almost 8 years ago that sat in a living room and was only used to check email once a night. It was in near perfect condition including the battery. It was a PM 1.3 512mb ram, 40gb hdd.
Another employee recently turned in a completely busted up T60 that he really mistreated. To "punish" him and because the boss didn't want to pay for a new laptop, I gave him the T40 which should be much slower. I upgraded the ram to 2gb and HDD to WD blue 160gb.
Pretty amazing after 8 years it will continue to be quite useful. Windows 7 was just too slow and there are no win7 video drivers for the radeon 7500 so I went with a clean XP install. It runs fine and its quite capable of handling any and all office / web browsing tasks.

My salute!
I guess you need to replace the battery as it would age (even with minimal use) after 8 years. -
The battery reported a few hours remaining when I unplugged it briefly. It probably has very few charge cycles since it sat for 8 years always plugged in.
