On my lenovos, all Windows Vista were installed in fresh, and no ThinkVantage software installed.

Lenovo X and T series are capable of Active Protection System which detects the movement of the laptop, and parks hard disk headers to minimize the shock.

I'm wondering that even if I didn't install no ThinkVantage, does active protection system still work? Do I have to install specific driver or software for that?

In my opinion, this mechanism should be implemented in hardware leve, since desktop operating systems cannot guarantee realtime-ness. So, it should work without any software support. Am I right?

you're not right! in order for that function to work, you need to install Thinkvantage Active Protection System program.
