Can you use any of the other Lenovo AC Adapters or another brand beside the Lenovo 135W that comes with the machine to run/power the battery? A few people mentioned in the W510 owners thread that using a 90W Adapter causes the computer to go into a power saving mode which can't be overridden. Is this true, or can the 90W adapters be used with the same or similar performance as the 135W?

As anyone who has one knows, the thing is the size of a brick and difficult to pack/transport.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of bad news. Lenovo can make a mistake but I doubt they have. Lenovo generally does not pack extras with their stuff. They usually pack exactly what it takes to run and that's all.

90 watt adapter will cause significant throttling issues with the W510. Basically if you want a functional W510 then stick with the 135 watt adapter.

CPU Turbo Boosting is disabled, and the CPU is downclocked on the 90W battery. Not exactly sure, but I'd bet there's a significant level of GPU downclocking as well.

So, overall, if you're on the go and just need to check your email or do some other very basic tasks, then a 90W adapter will cut some weight, but it'll definitely result in reduced performance.

Sounds like I will stick with the 135W. Any deals on these out there? The Lenovo site seems to be about the cheapest I have seen.

Also, the plug portion that goes into the wall always disconnects from the power "brick", is this common? Anyway of the newer models work better like the old three prong plugs?

the ac plug that goes into the wall are not integrated into the power supply.

I use a two prongs power supply which is more convenient than the three prongs power supply.

You may have to use a bit of force to plug these two components together, but if it's completely plugged in, it shouldn't be coming apart easily.

Any new power bricks work on the W510 besides the 135w monster that came with it? Traveling with this thing is a nightmare, it weighs as much as a small laptop and is literally the size of a brick.

Yes. The new and improved 170W brick. Lighter and more powerful.

The laptop power connector on the 170W brick will not fit into a W510. It has two notches that other power Thinkpad power adapters lack.

Sorry you took that seriously. Next time I'll add something to denote sarcasm.

The original question has been asked and answered for over 18 months now on a variety of forums on the internet. The answer is still no. Unless of course you consider the 90W an option for charging while the machine is turned off.
