I recently installed a 9.5mm HDD in my X220t. When I bought it, I didn't realize the laptop used the slimmer 7mm style, and finding higher capacity 7mm drives is both expensive and difficult. Although it took a little effort to get it in, it seems to fit fine. Unfortunately the rubber side bumpers can't be used with it, but I have the active protection system installed.

I'm curious if anyone else had put a 9.5mm drive in one of these machines, and what your long term experience has been. Any problems or issues to note over time?

Also, I'll add I'm not using it as my OS drive. I have an SSD installed in the mSATA slot for the OS.

@ThorofAsgard I'm personally pretty much against using HDDs inside X220 tablet, or any other convertible tablet for that matter - they affect battery life, produce noise and vibrations, and most of all - make people nervous due to their mechanical nature. Check how well it sits with keyboard, and maybe even keyboard bezel, removed; use some pads to make it sit snug - and everything will be OK.

You can get the 2TB 7mm Seagate ST2000LM007 for >$90, which seems inexpensive to me, though everyone is different I suppose.

Many users have used a 9.5mm drive in ThinkPads with 7mm bays. You'll need to drop the rubber bumpers and dremel down the tabs in the bay for the drive to fit, but it should work. Personally, I'd get the Seagate, but that's me.
