Hi everyone !
Well, I kinda figured this was the "normal" thing with laptops as they age.
For the past year or so, everytime I boot up my T61 (fresh start, not waking from sleep, or hibernation) it takes a good 9 minutes or more to actually load the desktop and actually USE the system. Is this normal ? How fast does your system work, from the time you press the "power" button from a cold start, to the time you can actually use your laptop ?
A little history on my machine, about 4 months ago I got a Mal-ware virus and had to do a systems restore. Even after that it still started up VERY slow. Once the computer is up and running, everything works great. The internet is super fast, applications open up OK, not the speediest, but just "OK".
My 64GB SSD X301 starts up in about 30 seconds, and the hard drive space is 75% full. My T61 has a 160GB 7200RPM drive that is not even 55% full and it starts like a snail. I already did the basics (closed down the applications that I don't need to have automatically run in the background on start up, etc.), I defrag almost weekly, etc.
Is there anything I'm missing ? Is my laptop still infected with some sort of virus ?
Thank you for ANY input !
Mike

Most probably it's infected or some bad software/hardware.
Try spybot search and destroy -
Well I know this doesn't really help, but my T61 boots in about 2 mins total.(Push of button to being able to open Google Chrome)

Twenty two seconds from power button to usable desktop on my Y460
Ok, that's not helpful either. Something is absolutely wrong with your machine; there's no way ANY OS should take nine minutes to start on your machine. You should look at the WIndows Event log (control panel -> administrative tools) and see if you're getting massive errors in your system or application event log.
You should also check to ensure you don't have any devices that are reporting errors in device manager. FInally, I'd use MSCONFIG (start -> run -> type MSCONFIG and click OK) to prune down what processes are starting. -
I would try reformatting the thing.

Having a lot of programs on the machine also contributes to the long startup time. Although you may not be aware of many tiny startup entries that programs add, it does collect, and after a while, they do bog down a system. You can try a reformat - that will likely significantly cut down on the time for boot.

My T61 boots around 17-20 secs with SSD and 40 processes running altogether on Windows 7 Pro x64. I only run 4 things on startup including hotkeys and antivirus. With a 7200RPM HDD it averages about 35 secs on startup instead.
It depends what software and processes you run, check the "msconfig" and trim unwanted programs to trim the startup time. -
definitely some malware is still present. i had similar situation about a year ago with my dell inspiron. it got infected with malware really bad. i formatted the thing and everything went back to normal.
9+ minute boot up time ?
