I just bought T400s from an online-retailer (microsoft store), not lenovo.com. However, the "one-year" manufacture warranty on T400s will expire in 9 months. I guess the laptop has been in stock for three months, and it is just shipped to me.

Which store (the retailer or lenovo) should I ask for extending the warranty period to the advertised "one-year"? Or, do they even listen to me?

If you had a similar problem and dealt with lenovo or a retailer, please let me know it went.

    Thank you!

If you have your dated receipt, contact Lenovo. They'll have you fax it to them and will adjust the date accordingly.

    Thank you for suggestion, JaneL.

Unfortunately, neither Microsoft store or Lenovo will adjust the warranty. My brandnew T400s will have just 9 month warranty, less than one year.

Lenovo says that since it is not sold by Lenovo, they are not responsible for the 9 month warranty. The brandnew T400s will be covered by the middle of September 2010. They tell me to contact Microsoft store.

Microsoft store says that it is the "manufacturer's warranty" so that the warranty period is handled by the manufacturer, not by Microsoft Store. Microsoft store tells me to contact Lenovo.

After spending too much minutes on my cell phone and my time and energy, I have decided to return the laptop which will, I guess, end up in the Lenovo outlet.

If you are considering to buy from a retailer (I guess, even if it is a certified retailer), you may not get one year warranty on the brandnew thinkpad.

I have seen many Ebay sellers stating the 1- year warranty expiration date which is ofter less than a year. It's definitely not Lenovo's responsability here since they sold the laptop 3 months ago.

I have the receipt for my purchase with the purchase date, and I told Lenovo rep that I just bought the laptop. Two different representatives at Lenovo gave me the same answer: I should contact Microsoft store.

call again telling them the warranty is supported by Lenovo, not Microsoft, and it is within Lenovo's policy to reset the warranty to the date of purchase, if it is purchased from its official resellers.

Yes, I've done this before personally. Call back and speak to another rep. If you're not making any headway ask to speak to a supervisor. I can't imagine that Microsoft is not a Lenovo authorized seller.

Typical case of X saying Y is responsible, and you go to Y, and they say 'naah X has to take care of it'. Argh.

Very annoying. But not so dramatic here?! If your unit survives the first 9 months of normal usage, it's unlikely to break in months 10-12 (unless you have a crappy nvidia GPU, or real bad luck).

    Thank you for inputs, guys.

I will call Lenovo again tomorrow, and see what happens.

Unlike three previous thinkpads that I owned, T400s is the first that I didn't buy from lenovo or ibm. I hope lenovo takes care of this so that I don't have to return T400s.

    Well, you never know
And it's a much better idea to get it sorted out now when the laptop does work than try to work it out in the off chance that the Thinkpad does break.

i have done this for a friend last week in Australia. All the call gets routed to the Lenovo central customer service anyway.... i think that is in Shenzhen China or Hong Kong......this is also why you get the funny English accents.

Hello guys, I just want to post an update on the 9-month warranty situation. I ended up returning the T400s.

I talked to a Lenovo rep regarding the so-called "one-year" warranty, and it seemed like he could help as he has asked me to forward the receipt email from the seller. Yet, there was no response from him nor from the warranty team. Oh, well...

Also, T400s was showing some disastrous signs: while watching on a Youtube clip, T400s died with the blue screen of death, which wasn't even legible. While working on documents, it had two or three BSOD. I had five or six random BSOD in a couple of days. Gosh, I just had this laptop about one week.

Well, I am back to shopping, and probably will order directly from Lenovo this time: I am trying to choose between T400 and T410.

    Thanks guys for your concerns!

I would have said if you got a nice deal on that T400 to just go ahead and upgrade the warranty on Lenovo's site to a 3yr onsite. I'm a big advocate of the 3yr onsite warranties. They're wonderful. In any case, I'd do the same for whatever computer you buy.
