Is there any reason not to get a 9 cell battery? I gather it sticks out the back, but the notebook still lies flat. Does not sound like that big of a deal, but perhaps I am missing something.

    weight vs battery life
It looks better flush too imo
I want a 4 cell battery along with my 9 cell so my X201s will weight ~2.5 lbs

Well, in the X201, the 9-cell does prop up the back slightly (millimeters) higher than the 4-cell. In all other models, the 9-cell only sticks out the back, and doesn't prop up the rear like other extended batteries.

The main disadvantage is that it's heavier than 6-cell batteries, and a lot heavier than 4-cell batteries. And, of course, it's more expensive. Personally I would get it because I have a use for 5-6+ hours of battery, but if you don't, it may not be the best option.

Do you need it? I did 9AM-5PM lectures using x200 + 9 cell back in my college days. Of course I had everything set to lowest etc. and was only taking notes plus internet, but it was monstrous battery life.

It's not heavy at all. 3.65 pounds - lighter than most laptops period.

Specify what laptop, what your usage is, are you able to charge in between?

Also what is your weight tolerance (not what you CAN carry). What do you WANT to carry?

Possibly the T 510. How much more weight are we talking about?

A 9 cell battery is ~1/3 lb more than a 6 cell battery

pros and cons. i cant stand the look (thanks, i can be vapid, but not letting thousands of dollars in R&D be uglified by a $100 accessory)

plus, i personally dont need 7 hours straight of battery life. prolly biggest reason

IMO, a 9-cell battery isn't that big of a deal with a 14" or larger screen. On the T410 at least, the 9-cell only sticks out by a row of 3 cells.

It seems like the "hassle" largely depends on what model you are looking at, which I don't think you have specified, yet.

If you do go with a 9 cell, make sure to get an OEM. I've found the aftermarket batteries aren't always designed to fit as precise as they should, and the extra torque a 9-cell puts on the connectors is sometimes enough to cause an open circuit and make the machine reboot.

Whenever I buy aftermarket these days, I always go for the smallest size.

I wasn't thrilled when I got my first 9 cell battery but it really isn't that much of a burden. Other than sticking further out, I haven't found anywhere where it was a hindrance to the laptop itself. I've come to rely on the extra power time with the more powerful machines and do not think I could live with a 6 cell.
