Where can I buy an 8-cell battery at a reasonable price for my X61s? My alternatives seem to be to buy from Lenovo at a high price (40Y7003 is $179 on the Lenovo website) or somewhere else in which case it's very hard to tell if they are selling a knock-off.

I would suggest Ebay. Make sure you're buying a genuine Lenovo battery, though. Read the listing carefully and look at the seller's feedbacks.

Once you receive the battery, the Lenovo PowerManager will detect whether or not your battery is genuine.

Are there any reputable non-Ebay stores out there?

The whole issue is how to "make sure you're buying a genuine Lenovo battery," at a reasonable price and without excessive hassle.
