I would like to upgrade my X200S to a higher capacity SSD. It currently has a 1.8" 120GB Toshiba SSD, 5mm height.

    Questions:

    (1) Is this SSD sitting in a 1.8" to 2.5" adapter? I think this is likely.

    (2) If so, can I use a 9.5mm 2.5" SSD for upgrade, or am I limited to 7mm 2.5" SSDs?

Any recommendations for an SSD would be appreciated too.

    Thanks

    Paul

    Yes.

You can use either 7mm or 9.5 drives.

What capacity are you interested in, and how much are you looking to spend?

Thanks, great to know that I can use either a 7mm or 9.5 mm one. I am looking at an upgrade to 240GB (for example the PNY XLR8 which is $100 on amazon), although the price on the 480GB SanDisk Extreme II is tempting too ($260 on buy.com).

I'd pass on the PNY since I'm allergic to SF controllers, but that's me.

Sandisk would be my pick, hands down, if you can afford it.

You might want to look at the WD Black² if you're looking to maximize capacity. It's a 120GB SSD and 1TB HDD slapped together, and it'll fit the X200s. You don't need speed for storage.

Any opinions in Intel or Kingston (V300 or HyperX), considering reliability issues, and also the fact that the X200S has SATA II and not III?

I'd pass on Kingston. In a wide circle.

SATA 3 SSDs will work in a SATA 2 laptop, but they will operate at their rated SATA 2 speeds which is usually much slower.
