I have not logged on for a while as you can see from my signature specs going back some years...
Anyway I have recently purchased a X1 6th Gen with FHD display coming from a 3rd Gen with FHD.
I can honestly say the 6th Gen screen is worse than the 3rd Gen. 6th Gen seems to have dark edges round the screen edge I have never seen this before and didnt expect on a £2000 laptop with maxed out spec.

I have recently read that this generation (6th) has your exact type of problem with their FHD displays.
Here is where I read it: https://www.ultrabookreview.com/20144-best-ultrabook-2018-x1-carbon-vs-xps-13/
This guy found that every FHD display shows this defect. I guess your options are to exchange it for one with a higher res screen, or keep ordering and returning the laptop until you find one with an acceptable screen.

Thanks for your reply, I have also seen users having similar issues on the lenovo web forum.

I re-ordered one from Lenovo direct and the estimated shipping time went from about a week to over a month from my order, which is completely unacceptable. Canceled the order.
Not sure if Costco gets inferior machines, I doubt that's the case. But this whole experience has forced me to abandon the X1C and I have a refurb Dell 7490 being delivered tomorrow. Not happy at all because I love the X1C, but QC has gone down the toilet. -
costco just sells pre-configured machines, that's why they can get a large volume
what you're ordering on the lenovo website is CTO -

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again!

My X1C6 "HDR" WQHD has a very light border about the edges of the display, at low brightness. Goes away at high brightness. Still the best laptop display I have had, though disappointing nevertheless. I am tempted to test the 15" waters next time around, especially if they use a ~2560x1440ish resolution (or 2560x1600, as the next 17" LG Gram is going for). I also thought the complaints about "slow display" were just that, complaints. But they are not. I frequently lose the cursor when its moving. I've not had this problem since the DSTN display in my first laptop, the IBM 310ED. I guess even the best display for a Thinkpad is still pathetic in many ways.

Guys, How to a send DM/PM? I've searched everywhere.
-
"Start a Conversation" should be the correct option.
That being said, I think new members with low postcounts are restricted from DM/PM, mostly to prevent spambots. Though any questions could probably be asked in the open forum, to benefit everyone.
EDIT: Oh, I see. I think you are trying to PM/DM @Mobius 1 for something. In that case, ignore my comment on open questions. -
Oh, so I wont be able to message anyone yet?

@Mobius 1 has to message me, correct?

I actually just bought the X1 again since the price dropped, I paid $1167 shipped. Got delivered yesterday. Config is i5 8350/16/256/FHD non touch/1 year onsite warranty. My screen is AUO and has no issues other than some screen door effect / grain when scrolling white backgrounds. Could be far, far worse. The BOE screen uses PWM dimming which I can't stand and looked like total crap to me. Looking on the parts site it looks like they added a 3rd FHD non touch LCD into the mix. Replaced the crap Intel SSD with a Samsung 970 Evo. Also got the Nidec fan which some people don't like compared to Delta, I have no issue with it. Laptop is dead silent at idle and doesn't make abnormal noise when under load. Keyboard has the mushier keys, not really a major issue for me. My lid is a bit crooked in that the right side has a slight gap / is raised when closed.
The two Dell 7490 that I tried also had screen and SSD lottery. The Innolux FHD screen was among the best I've seen. My replacement got an LG FHD screen and half of it was a different tint and dull in comparison.
Build quality wise I like the X1 better than the 7490. It is much lighter, slimmer, and just feels better. The keyboard, touchpad, and TrackPoint put Dell to shame. And I thought the Dell was pretty decent. One 7490 had terrible creaking any time I pressed on the palm rest area. But this X1 has a very slightly crooked lid when closed. Pick your poison.
I will say that Dell Pro Support is the best support out there although Lenovo was pretty responsive when dealing with my prior X1 systems.
At the end of the day for your use both systems should serve you well. It really is a toss up. I've gone through hell just trying to get one with an acceptable screen, now that I finally got one I think I'll be able to overlook the lid issue. Good luck with whatever you decide, both are great and both have issues that you can probably live with.powerslave12r, Tatum36, jeremyshaw and 1 other person like this. -
I'd have to agree with jlp0209, Dell business support is good enough that it kept me in the Dell ecosystem long after I would have otherwise dropped them from consideration. Their HW just isn't what I'm looking for nowadays, but the support was always there in the few times I had to rely on it. I cannot say the same for HP or ASUS.

Thanks @jlp0209 , @jeremyshaw and @Mobius 1 for your assistance through this obviously overwhelming process.

@jlp0209 I noticed you said you paid $1167 shipped. Was that price including shipping?

That's why /r/ThinkPad discord server has a discount tracker that updates itself so you don't have to manually check.
