I don't understand why, but most Thinkpads do not come with a 64 bit option for Vista. Do you think if I order over the phone I can get a x64 Vista OS?

This is one of my primary concerns with purchasing a notebook. I have 64 bit on my desktop and I love it.

Hardly any manufacturers offer Vista x64. No you will not get a x64 disk unless that's what you had on your order. Currently, only the T61P offers Vista x64.

As long as you have the right Vista license (Home Premium, Business, etc.), you can install the x64 version by buying a Vista Anytime Upgrade Disk for $5.

Thats a thought. I normally like to to reformat anyways to lose bloatware. I can use my Vista Ultimate DVD with my Lenovo Vista license to install a fresh copy of 64 bit legally?

If your T61p has a Vista Ultimate license then yes you can. Advice: Consult the sticky and use the Clean Install Guide for guidance and for backing up your activation before proceeding.

What if I purchase the Business license. Am I free to chose between 32 and 64 bit when I reformat? This is in a purely legal sense.

You are permitted to run either the x86 or x64 version of windows that your license entitles you to. So, if you use Vista Business then you can go either 32 bit or 64 bit.

FYI, if this is for mission critical stuff, I suggest you stick with XP SP2. :)

I am running Vista x64 on my desktop and I like it. This will be somewhat mission critical as I will be doing a lot of school work on it.

    Desktop has 4GB of RAM.

I plan on purchasing the laptop from Lenovo with 1x1GB of RAM and adding a 1x2GB for 3GB total.

Installing a 64-bit version of Windows Vista on computer that is running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista
If you have purchased an Upgrade license together with a Windows Vista DVD, you must use one of the following methods.
    Method 1
Purchase a full version of the 64-bit version of Windows Vista.
    Method 2
    1. Remove the 32-bit version of Windows Vista.
    2. Install Windows XP.
    3. Install the 64-bit version of Windows Vista by using an installation method that is listed earlier in this article.

Sounds to me like a 32 bit Vista OEM is only good for 32 bit.

x64 is much faster. Why would you even think of running 64 bit?
