    Hi..

I just finished a fresh install of Vista w/ all the updates. I used R&R and back up this base image to an external drive. I have also installed Sp1 and back that up as well (External drive).

Now R&R shows the base image and post sp1 to be 8 and 4 gig. Now this is stored onto my external drive.

When I look at my local HD 75 gig(80 gig capacity) it shows I have used 25 gig w/ 49.5 Free. I read Vista fresh installs use 6-8 gig. Where and what is this extra HD space coming from? This 15 gig is quite a bit of space.. I dont think R&R have stored my backups locally so waht could this be?

    thx

I have 11GB used with a Vista Business x64 install (with SP1 RC1 Refresh installed). This is with some of my programs installed, drivers and such. This is because SP1 is not integrated in the OS. It will surely take less space if it was slipstreamed.

Hi. I have installed Home Premium. I am rebuilding my T61 as we speak. I just completed the OS install with no updates/drivers. My HD reads 58.9 free out of 74.5. Looks like a new install takes 14-15 gig? Please note I have deleted the HIDDEN partition.

Anyone help on this? Is this normal?

I blew away the previous windows. During the initial install I deleted the partition, format then the installation files of Vista. No previous OS.

I have now resize shadow storage to 1 GB and have played with both disabling and enabling 1GB shadow storage size. However I am still @ 15-17 Gig used.

    What is going on?

Anyone suggest a utilitiy that I can find out where my HD space have gone?

You can try using vLite to cut down the installation size of Vista - but you will have to reinstall, though.

Many are not considering that, on a new Vista installation, several GB are reserved for the cache (pagefil.sys). If you, as I, have 4 GB RAM, you can reduce your pagefil to 600/1200 9User defined) and you will regain 3Gb space back after a reset.

If you follow my Vista Tweaks thread (SEE BELOW), there are plenty of areas where you will save space. You also need to consider that space is also reserved for Vista restore (This is addressed in my tweaks).

I have recently found out that Vista also likes to keep a hiberfil.sys file in your Windows installation drive. Even though you don't want to Hibernate it will still keep the file. If you have 4GB of RAM the file is 4GB large. Here's how to delete it (you'll be able to see it by activating hidden files option)

Flamenko.. I do have 4 gig of RAM. How do I reduce the pagefil.sys?

As for restore. I currently use Lenovo's rescue and recovery utility and all my backups are stored on an external 500Gig Drive. I only have 80 Gig and would like to free up as much space as possible.

I have applied a lot of the Vista tweaks.. that thread is very helpful.

    Thx in advance.

Just looked at the windowsanytimeupgrade website and it states that

so, 18+4gb of pagefile and other misc installations...that sounds about right until you get rid of a few things.
