I thought that only the 9 cell battery sticked out. But I've read that the 6 cell battery also sticks out a bit. Is this true?

Really. Do you have one? Because there is the 4 cell battery (which I think they don't do anyomore) and the 6 cell... Just to make sure.

No it doesn't. Only in the 14.1" widescreen models.

You confuse the 14.1" and 15.4" models, the 15.4" T61p has only 6 and 9 cells batteries, and only the latter sticks out.

See it here with the 6 cell battery:

On the 14inch, there are three batteries, 4, 6, and 7. The 4 cell doesn't stick out, the 6 and 9 do to varying degrees.

The 15inch has two batteries, 6 and 9. 6 is flush, 9 sticks out about an inch out the back (i.e. behind the screen where you can't see it anyway).

Many folks seem to be fixated on the asthetics of the battery and I'm not sure why. I can definitely see why people would be concerned with weight or dimensions versus battery life, but the 9 cell sticking out the back doesn't look bad at all... I have both (and I have the 4 and 8 cell for my X61t) and I generally use the protruding ones unless I really want to travel light.

I have the 7 and it sticks out a lot. Doesn't bother me from an asthetics point of view since its in the back. However, when putting it into a case, one has to place the edge of the LCD lid in first, which is kind of awkward. If you dont have a good case I can see how the lid would be damaged ie from a hard accidental drop of a laptop bag.

Lid first really? I have a case and if I were to one-handedly insert my notebook in, it would be holding the lid and with the battery side going in first. I figured it would be a awkward to hold it by the battery.

Which brand? I use one with the so called "Air Port". Guess it would work but I hold it by the sides of the case to insert.

By the sides? Oh ok. That's different then, in that case, my previous post is moot. :)

Ok, good point. 90% of the time I use a backpack (vertical sleeve) so this is a non-issue (battery is right or left. 10% of the time I use a rolling bag which does load horizontally. When I do, I put the machine in latch first as well.

May I ask you why you need 3 current or near current generation Thinkpads?

I really have/use two. The short version is:

T60p is my work pc provided by my company. It rarely gets used. It's a "managed pc" so not terribly flexible/friendly as far as software choices
T61p is my personal pc and is now that I have the X61t it is my "desktop replacement". It stays home most of the time and gets used for gaming, higher end development work, and similar things.
X61t is what I carry around all the time nowadays. Fits the bill most of the time, when it doesn't, I bring the T61p powerhouse instead.

I don't mean to Jump your thread, but what is the battery life with the T61P and the 6-cell battery.

(I have the 9-cell battery currently)

What is it like going from WUXGA to XGA??

I would love an X series if you could get the higher resolution w/o it being a tablet.

I am a resolution junkie... I always had the 1400x1050 screens in earlier thinkpads, had a Toshiba with 1600x1200, and the 61p with the WUXGA. I thought the XGA in the X61t was going to drive me nuts, but everything I had read stated that the best resolution for handwriting recognition and tablet apps was indeed 1024x768 and I bought during the SVGA "crumbling bezel" saga.

So I went with the XGA and it is great.... Doesn't bother me a bit. I do miss the high res and having more screen real estate sometimes, but I've adapted. I turn off the power guage so I have more taskbar space, keep my quicklaunch list shorter, and some other things like that.

I don't have a T6x series 9 cell or I would be happy to try it for you. I would suspect that the time is 2 hours or less, depending on your power settings and usage. The 61p with the NVidia graphics uses a bit of power.
