Deciding between a 100gb 7200rpm or a 160gb 5400 rpm harddrive. I have a 500gb external, so an extra 60gb isn't crucial... but I've heard the 7200rpm is louder and drains more battery? Is that true?

I shouldn't have any real noticeable difference on battery life. As for noise, I think that depends much more on the brand/model of a harddrive rather than just the rpm. From what I've heard the harddrives in thinkpads are supposed to be pretty quiet and I've never heard anything about the 7200 rpm one's being louder.

In terms of performance going from 5400 to 7200 rpm should have a fairly noticeable difference. Since you have that 500gb external drive, I'd definitely get the 7200.

My old Seagate drive was very cool and quiet.

I would also be interesting in seeing a comparison of heat/battery life/performance between the 5400 and 7200rpm drives on the Lenovos.
