    500 gb hard drive

    so from what i can tell

    you can put a 500 gb hard drive on the x201 but not on the x220, right?

    why on earth did lenovo do that

    AFAIK, there is one 500gb hard drive that will fit into an X220.

    Lenovo's marketing people thought that a computer 2mm or about 1/16" thicker wouldn't sell well. It was a bad call.

    You can buy the Hitach Z5K500. 500GB, 2,5", 7mm. That one fits into the X220 without any modification.

    And you can fit any 9,5mm drive (up to 1TB) when you remove the keyboard and fiddle the drive in. Check this forum, there are loads of posts here about that.
