The 200 GB hard drive that came with my T61p is full. I need a bigger one (but equally, or more, silent and reliable). Full Disk Encryption would also be a plus.

I was thinking of buying one of, at least, 500 GB and 7200 rpm. Is there such a thing? What is the best (or, at least, the brand used in OEM Thinkpads)? Are there even bigger drives?

Yep, there is a 500GB 7200rpm HDD offered by Lenovo through "accessories and upgrades - storage"...

    It's not for a laptop (3.5 in).

But, apparently Seagate has released some 500GB @ 7200rpm. There's even one with FDE:

Is this one compatible with the T61p? And anyone knows how Seagate performs (speed, silence, energy consumption)?

First, double check the reviews. I recall reading (don't have link) that the WD Scorpio Blue 500GB/5400 was a little better than the Seagate 500GB/7200rpm. Couldn't say why exactly other than the WD's do seem to do pretty well. A few minutes with Google should help you find the reviews.

Any SATA laptop drive should be fine in a T61p.

If I buy the Seagate 500 GB @ 7200 rpm with Full Disk Encryption, do I have to change any BIOS settings?
