For anyone like me waiting for the 14" 4:3 T61, two reps told me it will not be introduced at all
So again I'm curious if I can order from that alumni site? Will they cancel the order once found you are not alumni member? Appreciate any advice!

T61 4:3 model is only available to educational customers so far. 8889CTO and 8895CTO are available on Lenovo OSU student or alumni&retirees site. But you won't receive it until August. Ask somebody in OSU make the purchasement for you!

I've heard that the T61 in 4:3 can and is being ordered by corporate accounts. We're supposed to be eventually getting a large number of them at work. In fact I expect to receive a new 4:3 14.1" T61 sometime in the second half of this year. These are said to be business class notebook being constructed to business class standards for Lenovo's all-important corporate customers (the ones who spend mega-millions).

I don't know why they can't or won't offer them to the general public. A wild guess would be that there exists supply constraints with the LCD in that size, just like the supply constraint with the IPS screen.

Too bad to know it exists but be unable to order it :( Unfortunately I don't know any one from OSU--even if I do, I guess I can't use the fatwallet and tailormade all those stuffs. The prices of the T61 4:3 on OSU alumni site is much higher than a wide screen I could get using those discounts.

If you are an alumni or maybe know someone who is, perhaps that could get you somewhere.

I work for a large company that used to buy thinkpads but has since switched to Dell. I logged into the Lenovo store via my "corporate discount" account and the 14.1 4:3 wasn't an option. Perhaps this has to do with us switching to Dell (though I'm hoping they will be available later), but has anyone outside of education actually ordered a T61 14.1 4:3? With the exception of Lowspeed's previous post I've only seen one other picture of the T61 14.1 4:3. Has anyone else actually laid their hands on one?

Does a laptop with a 4:3 screen have a smaller overall footprint than a 16:10 laptop? It seems like my 14" T40 is a little bit smaller than my old 13" Macbook.

You mean by area? Because yeah, your 13.3" macbook is actually wider than your T40 by a little over a half inch, but smaller by area. The closest rectangle to a square is bigger for any given diagonal (so 4:3 has larger area than 16:10).

But really that's just the measurements/areas of the displays themselves. Actual measurements of the thnkpad 14.1" cases:

    13.2" x 9.3" ~= 12.2" x 10" (122in^2)
    > macbook at 12.78" x 8.92" (114in^2)

Just depends on whether you have more vertical or horizontal desk/work space (or lap space).

It's funny. While the area of the 14.1" 4:3 is slightly larger than that of a 14.1" 16:10, the area of it's footprint is actually slightly smaller. Even more, the same applies even for 4:3 15.0 vs wide 15.4 (in t 60/61).

I ordered a 4:3 T61 (8889) last weekend using the EPP and the stackable 10% coupon. Est. ship date 8/9.

It worked out about $200 more than a similarly-configured widescreen model but still cheaper than the T43 I bought two years ago so I was happy to pay the price. Got it with Nvidia, a/b/g/n, DVD-RW, bluetooth, 7200 HDD and the standard 3-year warranty. The only downside to the 4:3 is that I don't believe they have a firewire port, but I can live without it.

Let me know if you want the secret link to the order page ;)

I've seen the corporate order page with the T61 4:3 before. PM me though, I'd like to know if this is the same page.

I'd like to see pictures when the laptop finally arrives. I've seen the ones from Lowspeed a while back, but seeing another batch from a second party would be nice.

Nice, the 4:3 T61 offers a 9 cell battery. I wonder if it's basically just the T60 chasis.

I wondered that, too. The tabook notes that the 8889 model (you know, the one no-one can order) has a rollcage for the chassis and the screen. The T60 has no screen rollcage AFAIK. However, I've no idea if it has the improved cooling fan setup. If not then it'll go back cuz I'm already sick of my T43 fan always running.

I've never followed a thinkpad release cycle as closely as I currently am with the T61 (because I've never needed to replace a kaput laptop at the beginning of the new model being released). Did IBM always do such a poor job informing customers of what was coming, or is this new with Lenovo? Also, did IBM release the new line in a trickle like we are currently seeing with the T61 (First the 15", then 15" with ATI video, then remove T60 14.1" from their site, etc...)?

So far what I've seen Lenovo's way of releasing the T61 is terrible and was just wondering if this is standard with a thinkpad line upgrade.

I was poking around other countries Lenovo pages and found the 14.1" SXGA was available to them. I wonder if this means we are going to be getting it after all or if the US isn't going to see the 4:3 because we were suckered into a widescreen craze.

It might be on some European Lenovo site, but keep in mind that we can't get everything what's on our local Lenovo site. Besides that, if we could get it, it's at least 35% more expensive.

I am from that small country called "The Netherlands" and we can't get T61's 4:3 here neither, just like you guys can't get it.

Well, you can get one from Germany, obviously :)

    http://www5.pc.ibm.com/de/products....Agent&brand=THINKPAD&series=ThinkPad+T+Series

I've been waiting for a 14" T61 for a long time and now it turns out that one of the fews places you can get one is where I live :D Of course, compared to US, the prices here are ridiculously high.

Nevertheless, as you can seen from the web site, you can get a T61p with a 14.1" display @ 1400x1050 and nVidia Quadro FX, which is perfect for me.

Does anyone have pictures of T61p with 14.1" display?

PS: Hm, strange, the 14.1" version comes only with 128MB video memory?

No, we can't get it. Damn it, read what I say!!!

They put beatiful stuff on our sites every time. But that doesn't mean we can get it. Only being on a freacking European Lenovo doesn't say we can get it in Europe. It's just a *paperlaunch*.

We can't get laptops straight from Lenovo. We have to buy one of the 100 (where from 90 models are 200% more expensive then in USA and 10 models *only* 35% more expensive then in USA) pre-configed models. We have to buy it from retailers. And you won't find a retailer for most of the good models.

Have fun, be happy now you know we can get it neither ;) :D

Well, I've given a link in my previous post, but you cannot order from there. It's just a list of the "available" models, and you can ask "your local retailer" (usually local retailers are less informed than me, but that's another story) for the price.

The ThinkPad prices in Europe are just ridiculously high. I will personally get one somehow from the US once they are available.

Order availbility for GAV models (those you may find in tabook) thru Lenovo OSU student store need to be checked with sales rep. It may be difficult for you to actually receive 34% off discount for GAV models because the supply is limited according to the confidential contract.

As for other CTO models, I think the discount of Lenovo-OSU student store is the same as K-12 and higher education store (10% off), but still higher than Education Employee Purchase Program (Faculty & staff or Students), up to 5% off.

You can always order 14.1-inch 4:3 screen model from educational protal. It is not available for all US states, but it is available in California. Select Higher education - CA, you will be able to see 8889CTO models. This will offer 10% off discount.

I would go to graduate school this Fall. If I finally make my decision for a new ThinkPad, I could actually ask Lenovo ship the merchandise to California, so I think I am qualified and my order wouldn't be cancelled any way.
