3rd Gen Yoga X1 available: No wwan configs?

One of the big selling points is the LTE-A for my travel needs.

None of the configurations mention it, but it is prominently featured in the splash page.

Does anyone know the deal?

Is WWAN available for the Yoga 3rd gen yet?

CTO options will be available in a few months I think. New releases will only offer preconfigured for a short while.

 

That's disappointing. This looks like a worthy upgrade, but, the lack of connectivity at launch is baffling. It is a business class machine after all?

 

I have a feeling Lenovo might be doing this because of Chinese New year, which will be celebrated next week. As always, this means that the factories shut down for a few days, which naturally delays things quite a bit. Preconfigured models can be produced faster, so they can concentrate supply on those for now.

We might not see CTO models of the new ThinkPads in America until March.

All in right now with perks and discounts, can walk away for a fully loaded (sans LTE) for under $2500... tempted if the LTE-A addition won't be too difficult to perform. I believe it is an m.2 part.

No. But I have a corp plan through ST (and some additional coverage through our CC).

$2500 is still steep...but for early adopters, there is always a price.

Hmm its not really early adoption because this is the third gen. Just curious why not go for the 1st or 2nd gen? They are much much cheaper. i actually have a 1st gen that I bought when the OLED screen options just came out and after taxes it was around $1800 cause I used the standard Lenovo discounts at the time. I can't believe its $2500 now, I mean I get the 8th gen CPU upgrade but the screen has been changed from OLED to Dolby Vision which may actually be a downgrade.

 

March maybe. Most Chinese factory have break around this time of year due to lunar new year.

 

@xitongzou early adopter on a refresh. But point taken. I would LOVE the OLED option... except, they are no longer offering the configuration AND it battery life is slaughtered on PCs with OLED because of the preponderance of WHITE (spreadsheets, Docs, powepoints, etc...). For TVs yeah, the inky blacks and general use of dark colors is a power boon (being off). But keeping individual OLEDS lit white comes at a power expense.

Which brings me to your second point...8th gen Cores... are supposedly significantly more efficient providing much better battery consumption. That has real value to me.

@Mobius 1 : do you think that a refresh this year could see Vega chips rolled out. The package size is different, and, mainboard would have to be modified.

 

Doubt it, the Yoga's chassis is small enough as it is to contain 8th gen ULV, not sure how it would cope with a higher tdp or different board design requirements for Vega.

 

That makes sense, my X1 Yoga is definitely not one of my longer lasting laptops, I think I get like 4-5 hours max with it at full brightness. OLED not very power efficient for laptops (maybe this explains why every other maker aside from Alienware/X1 Yoga don't use OLED)

 

I bought one of the pre-config models with OLED. In my possession, testing it. Any way to purchase the parts for WWAN and install on my own? Anybody have a link where i can buy it? I am doing battery testing on the 3rd gen Yoga now and comparing with my 2nd gen with no OLED. OLED definitely drains the battery. Screen is nicer though, much more vibrant colors.

 

The X1 Yoga Gen 3 isn't available with OLED.

 

Sorry meant to say i have the Dolby Vision version, whichever the better model screen is.

 

You won't see the Dolby Vision screen advantage now even with HDR videos because HDR is not yet enabled on this model yet. It will be later enabled via a Software Update as mentioned on the Lenovo website. I bought also the one with the HDR screen.
