Hey I just got my new Thinkpad T61 (which is awesome, btw. Very impressed with it :D ) just wanted to know how I can find out if my machine is 32 bit or 64 bit??

Vista says the OS is 32 bit but I am not sure if the machine too is 64 bit. Is there any way to check this out??

    Thanks,
    Auxin

Glad to hear you're enjoying your T61.

    :)

    [Edited; misread question.]

    Your system is indeed 64-bit.

the correct answer is both and neither, a machine isnt really 32bit or 64bit. Your processor however is. With the most recent processors from intel and for some time the higher model amd processors have had the capability to do both 32 and 64bit processing. Your new thinkpad t61 should have one of these processors. With the 32 bit version of vista your system will perform as a 32bit system. if in the future you decide to upgrade to a 64bit version of vista your t61 will perform as a 64bit system. hope this helps your understanding.

No, a laptop most definitely can be 32-bit or 64-bit. The Santa Rosa platform his T61 is based on is indeed 64-bit, as opposed to the older Napa platform which remained 32-bit even if you put a 64-bit Merom processor in it and installed a 64-bit OS.

Yes, your computer is fully 64-bit compatible, any 64-bit OS should run fine.

Ah, I misread your question in the opening post, I thought you were wanting to confirm that Vista was 32-bit.

However, yes. Your system is 64-bit capable.

Sorry for the mix up in my earlier post...

    :)
