I bought my T60 from Euclid Computers back in 2007 and it came with a standard 3-year warranty. They seem to be out of business, but have been browsing top-seller T400's at Costcentral, and they all come with only 1-year warranty. The strangest thing is that a few weeks ago they still had some of the same models with the 3-year warranty in stock, so I was wondering if there has been some change in Lenovo's policy in not offering 3-year warranties any more (unless you buy directly from them and upgrade to multi-year options when ordering a CTO model online). Any help please?

The price of the T400 have dropped compared to the T60, this is why it only has one year standard warranty, unless it is special model.

But you can still upgrade the warranty to 3 years by calling Lenovo customer service.

The warranty period of per-configured (i.e., TopSeller) ThinkPad laptops vary with model numbers. The models with one-year warranty have different model numbers than the models with three-year warranty. See tabook for a complete listing of warranty periods for each model.

And to answer your question, Lenovo still offers pre-configured ThinkPad laptops with three-year warranty.

So, are all preconfigured T400 at other online retailers available with only 1-year warranties? I could have sworn that costcentral had some with 3-year warranty a few weeks ago (but they seem to be gone), and the difference in price was only $50 or so, which is much less than the cost of upgrading to 3 years with Lenovo cust. serv.

The problem is that T400's are disappearing, and I'd rather buy a T400 than a T410 (lid rollcage, non-Led screen option). I would order from Lenovo and opt for 3-yr warranty when customizing to order, but the T400 is not available any more.

Have you looked in the Lenovo Outlet yet? There are usually many New ordered but canceled laptops - if you really want a T400 with a CCFL screen (don't know why you would), you could look in there.

The outlet has great prices BUT: the 1-year warranty cannot be extended on outlet items (although I would gladly pay, as others, I imagine, would too). There's been a long discussion about this issue on Lenovo's forum.

I'm trying to avoid LED screen because of repeatedly reported eye strain/headache due to the not very good LEDs Lenovo uses

It's true that the screens Lenovo uses are not of great quality, however, just because it is an LED-backlit screen doesn't make it harsher on the eyes for the vast majority of people. I've seen a couple isolated cases where people had trouble with LED-backlit screens, but most people use them just fine.

I believe it is possible to add additional years of warranty on preconfigured models bought from other retailers, albeit at a higher cost than if the 3-year warranty was purchased with the machine on Lenovo's website. You would need to call tech support if you want to do this.

Sigh. When I wrote that you can find model numbers with 3-year warranty in tabook, I was hoping that the little tip I offered would be sufficient to prompt you to do a little research (or just a little search) on your own, instead of us having to do all the work for you. Guess the teach a man to fish thing no longer works these days.

For your information, yes, pre-configured ThinkPad T400 with 3-year warranty are still widely available. Here are three examples:

    http://www.superwarehouse.com/p.cfm?p=1571242
    http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?edc=1940337
    http://www.costcentral.com/proddetail/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T400_2765/276594U/10998785

I would like to point out that the second link is from costcentral.

Thanks, I've actually looked up the tabook models in the meantime. There are only two problems:
    1. Back in January Costcentral had some 3-year warranty T400 models for much less, around $800, instead of $1150. Which means that either the have increased prices or sold out the cheaper models.
    2. Some of the 2765 models may be CCFL, but they are WXGA+, while I'd like to have (ideally) a CCFL WXGA (no led, no hi-res, basically).

Still, I appreciate the other tips. Are CDW and superwarehouse reliable Thinkpad retailers? I've only had experience with Costcentral and the now defunct Euclid Computers (both of which I've been satisfied with).
