OK guys, I am getting my 7K200 in next week and I want to transfer my existing 160 gb hd data in my t61p right now to the new drive. What software do you guys recommend? I just figured I would throw the new drive in my ultrabay adapter and use something like acronis true image to move it all over.... Will this work with the lenovo/ibm thinkvantage technologies? The secret partition and stuff? How did you guys move your data?

Acronis will work. You just need to clone it. However, another solution involves Vistas Complete PC Backup. If you have a usb drive to do the the complete backup to temporarily you can restore to the new dirve using a Vista boot disk and the backup you create in Vista. There is not need to buy acronis if you have a usb drive that you could use for the backup.

    @dalamar,
I put my 160 in a 2.5 usb HD enclosure and now use it for backups.

    clean install.

dalamar, get a small external enclosure for your old HD. they are small and compact and useful. the one i have is by vantec and uses USB or eSATA (grab an eSATA expresscard too).

There is no need to buy the acronis software even if I wanted to use it, it has a free 30 day trial! :)

I have it but don't know how I want to partition it. I wasnt to triple boot but trying to figure out how to divide it up.

Concerned about the configuration on my drive. I received my T61p with the Hitachi 100GB 7200 RPM Drive. I created the recovery media. Spent all last night running it (works pretty quickly actually).

I purchased the 200GB Drive, replaced the drive and ran the recovery media. Everything runs great BUT I seem to be missing some 13.8 GB of space!

When I run diskpart in Vista(32) it shows:
    Part# : 1
    Type : OEM
    Size : 7200 MB
    Offset: 1024 KB

    Part# : 2
    Type : PRIMARY
    Size : 179 GB
    Offset: 7201 MB

Now, I know that there is some space overhead for NTFS, but 13.8 GB seems to be a lot - too much. And FYI, this is the configuration right after the recovery - back to factory installed state; I made no modifications during setup and did not modify the partition configuration in any way.

I am planning to create another partition, but I was planning on having more GB at my disposal. So before I do that... just to make sure...

If you are using this drive with Vista 32, please post your partition sizes and config. If your results are different, please indicate if you did a "clean" install using the Vista OS disks, or if you solely used the recovery media created from the OEM partition.

OK. I figured out that the actual capacity of the drive is 186.2 *Binary* Bytes since the manufacturers tend to to be quite misleading with the way to advertise the capacity of their drives. I expected to have 200GB of binary file storage and we really only get 186.2 ...and it has alsways been that way with these drives; I just haven't noticed it that much I guess since the discrepency wasn't so hugely obvious - 13.8 GB is a lot of space to expect and then not have, haha. Oh well. Guess I'll get rid of that service partition now.

Have fun with your new 186.2's.

That's funny. I always knew it was 186GB and I'm a little miffed at marketing but yeah if you forget and find out again, its annoying, and funny.

Are any of you folks with the Hitachi 7k200 using the "optional" whole disk encryption? It says optional, but is it optional as in, an option when you buy the disk (paying more) or is it optional as in it comes with the disk and you don't have to use it?

I broke down and bought the drive. I'm going to sell my 100GB 7200rpm for $75 to offset the cost.

What do you guys think about having a Windows partition of 40GB and two data partitions from the remaining space. My current install with only programs uses 20GB. I think another 20GB ought to give me enough room to grow since I like running a tight ship.
