No I'm a tard... that's a typo. Yes, it was $229. Also found at: http://www.xpcgear.com/0a50940.html for the same price and free shipping. I've never ordred from xpcgear but I have ordered from zipzoomfly in the past and they ship very quickly. It doesn't look like zipzoomfly gets the best reseller ratings. Seems people have trouble sometimes with returns. I don't plan on returning this HDD and if there is any problem I'll just contact Hitachi directly.

Let us know how it goes - do you have the 7200.1 Seagate in your T61 currently? That would be great as I also have the same drive in mine - in my past experience the Hitachi 7K100 was quieter, but then again this was in the days of PATA and with AAM on. Let's hope the 7K200 carries on the legacy...

so is that Hitachi in the first post a good one to get?
is there a 160 GB model version that is cheaper

But i'd rather pay slightly more for a better built HD

Try the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160GB drive. I bought it for $116.50 from Dell a few days ago, but that deal has since passed.

    Big rumor! pun intended :p

The 7K200 is the same size (physically) as any other 2.5" HDD. I have installed two of them on two different T61s. It's an awesome HDD. Very quiet, very fast!!!

It fits fine and performance is great. I got the 7K200 and it gets a Vista performance rating of 5.4. Although that probably doesn't mean much, here is the HDTune score. Also the whole computer feels way, way faster now.

Anyone know how fast the 2.5 in/7200rpm Toshiba 320GB drive is going to be?

I am assuming that it is 50% more dense than the 200GB Hitachi 7k200, which means something like 23% faster.

Somehow it's hard to believe that improvements in the transfer speeds (though very important for the overall "feel") and slightly lower access times would lead to dramatically faster everyday performance.
Nevertheless, the responses from the early adopters are overwhelmingly positive.
Could it be because they're comparing the new drive to the much slower last gen 5400 rpm ones?
Here is a HDTune test of my 100GB 7K100 Hitachi.
Note that it's managed to get faster burst rate speed:

Thye 320GB drive is 5400rpm, the 7200rpm drive is 200gigs max with two 100 gig platters

You can easily see that the new Hitachis are much faster. In fact once you write 60GB of data the transfer rate difference is almost 40% (not to mention the faster access time). So I would consider it to be a dramatic increase.

I am not sure why my CPU usage was so high though. I have a 7300 with fairly low # of processes after reinstalling Vista. When I run HDTune, I am getting like 15% cpu usage.

I went back and re-read the announcements and you're right. They announced a 320GB and 7200rpm product at the same time, but they are not the same product.

That makes the Hitachi 7k200 look a lot more interesting to me. Or I could use the 320GB as an Ultrabay secondary.

Seems like the 7k200 and the new 7200rpm Toshiba may be good to compare. Was planning to get the 7k200 as soon as I got my laptop but think I'll wait for benchmarks.

I'm putting the drive the laptop comes with in the ultrabay, don't need that much hdd space (yet)

I like to keep my primary drive less than half full. You get better defrag results and better performance. (So I've read awhile back... I don't have anything to back that statement up right now.)

Anyway, I like to keep applications on the primary drive and other files on the secondary drive. You definitely get better performance with programs like Photoshop and Premiere when you set it up to have a secondary drive as a "scratch disk".

The fastest option is to use a SSD as primary drive for OS and few everyday applications and a magnetic big secondary for the rest.

I installed the Hitachi 7k200 200GB into my T61p on Friday. The drive seems to have sped up the computer a little and is quieter and cooler than the 7200rpm 100GB Seagate that was removed.

now hitachi has 7K200 series 100GB 7200rpm drive with 16MB cache, which might be better than previous 7K100 series 100GB 7200rpm drive(8MB cache?). for those who need faster but cheaper option, this 7K200 100GB drive might be more suitable.

Ouch, and my max transfer speeds are 37Mb/s. Mine's the Hitachi 5400RPM 120GB drive. Saving up for a 7200RPM. My Seagate 5400rpm drive got me 46Mb/s on my old Acer.. hmm.

    HD Tune: Hitachi HTS722010K9S Benchmark

    Transfer Rate Minimum : 29.2 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 63.1 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 51.7 MB/sec
    Access Time : 14.6 ms
    Burst Rate : 77.4 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : 3.8%

My old HDD (Seagate Momentus 5400.2 160GB) :

    Transfer Rate Minimum : 11.8 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 45.2 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 34.1 MB/sec
    Access Time : 15.8 ms
    Burst Rate : 63.1 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : 10.4%

For some reason, I get momentary dips that really lower the minimum transfer rate.

Or could it be that we are comparing a new drive with a fresh, clean image vs. a drive that has been in use for a while? A few months ago I re-formatted my drive as the image got too bloated, reinstalled the same programs and guess what? My system was so much faster... with the same drive.

What have you guys done or will do with your old HDs? I've been thinking if I should bite the bullet for this, but I also don't want to waste the extra $60 I spent upgrading my HD to the 7200rpm 100GB model.
