    Hello,
    I've been shopping around for a new hard drive for my R-51 thinkpad. I've noted that some drives have an ATA-6 interface and others have an IDE ULTRA ATA100 interface. The later one is specifically labeled Hitachi/IBM. Can anyone shed any light on what the difference is. Also, which hard drives would you recommend. Thanks.

    Just ordered the drive. I had seen this same drive for $215.00 at another site. Thanks for the info.

    OK,
    I ordered a 7200rpm/60 Gig harddrive for my R51 Thinkpad. Installed the drive, then proceeded to load the IBM supplied restore and recovery disks. after about the 3rd/disk I started getting crc errors. The program would tell me to load the next disk, then I would get more crc errors. I believe I got the errors on disks 3,5 and 6. Is there any other way to get my pc running without the restore disks. Note that the original hard drive is only 20 gig. Also, the notebook did not come with the operating system (Windows XP). Any help would be appreciated.

    I would say that you should start a new topic for your questions. It will be answered quicker that way.

    P.S. I personally dont have a lot of experience with installing new hard drives so I dont have advice for you, but some of the people on this forum are very knowledgable in that area and will be able to assist you.

    Not sure. You could do it in both. Then the moderators will delete the one that shouldnt be there.

    If you're getting CRC error when restoring, it could be a few things that are wrong.

    1. The HDD may have problems and therefore failing to write.
    2. The CD Drive is failing and therefore having problems reading the CD's
    3. The CD's are defective therefore giving you the CRC errors.

    Try contacting IBM and see if they can ship you replacement CD's to try. It shouldn't cost you anything since you're having problems with your exisiting ones. Also, don't mention the fact that you've installed a non-IBM purchased HDD, thay may not be so understanding after that.

    Once you get your replacement CD's you'll be able to tell if it's the CD drive or the HDD. If it's any one of the 2, get it replaced.

    Also ATA100, UltraDMA 100 and ATA-6(ATAPI-6) refer to the same thing;
    100MB/sec ATA.

    Good diagnosis Venombite.

    I'd suggest performing a full (long) reformat of the new drive before calling for help. You can do this from fdisk on the first CD, or from the HD setup usually.

    Of course the problem may be with the CDs too in which case that won't help. Maybe he should take a close look at the CRC error message to determine which drive is causing the problem.
