I was over at the lenovo forums and there are people having problems using 2 dims with games. There experiencing system crashes and shutdowns after playing games for as little as 10 minutes. With 1 dim things seem to be working ok. I just ordered a t61p with 3 gig's of ram and wanted to know if anyone here is having those issues? sounds like alot of the systems were bought back in 10/07.

    Thanks

    Evan

    Hey Evan,

Welcome to the forum. I know the odd person still is having the issue but it is luck of the draw. Lenovo knows about the issue and they will fix it with a mobo swap if you do happen to have it. It seems that the number of people affected has been steadily declining though. I purchased mine last month and do not have the issue (it was the first thing I checked :D). So don't worry, it will be alright. Also, since you have 3GB of RAM coming, you can do the quick fix of using the 2GB single stick to address the problem until you can afford to send your computer in for the repair. These are solid machines and don't let the slim chance of a previous problem deter you.

I've been fine with 2 DIMMS in both my T61p and T60.. No crashing related to ram issues.

Shouldn't this fix fall under the warranty? I would imagine the same problem would be happening for people in the 3D-design and rendering industry as well as gaming, so it would be a huge problem aside from gamers. Almost as important as the battery fixes they had awhile back that they didn't charge for.

EDIT: I'm not sure whether this is the same problem or not, but I've been getting the BSOD when doing anything dealing with 3D applications/games. Not sure whether this is an Intel 965 chipset problem or a motherboard/DIMM slot issue.

Sorry, let me clarify. It is under warranty. I simply meant when he can afford to lose the use of his computer while it is in getting repaired. It is most definitely a warranty issue.

I bought in February and have this issue. Guess I am unlucky. Strangely I have not heard anyone say it crashes on 3D design and rendering apps. I've only heard about 3D games.

I wouldn't let it stop your purchase though. The T61p is a great machine.

I'm using just 1x2GB RAM now until an official fix is posted. It works perfectly with just 1 dimm...

    Thanks for the reply,

It sounded like the problem was more towards machines purchased back in 10/07. Everything else I heard about the lenovo has been solid. My daughter has been using a z61t at school for the last 2 years without any issues. My ship date is on 5/5/08 so I'm thinking I should be fine. FYI I called lenovo this morning to change from vista premium to xp pro they had to cancel one order and reorder, I saved an additional 50.00 vs the price I paid off the web site and that includes the 27.00 up charge for xp.

Ah, thanks. Had me scared there for a second. ;)

Well, if what jnorman5 is saying, and it sounds about right, then I don't think there will be a soft fix for this unless it's just a BIOs issue.

My ThinkPad T61p is currently afflicted with this issue. Unfortunately I'm studying right now and can't afford the loss of my machine during repair, and so have been largely using one 2 GB stick of RAM. (partly for dabbling in some 3d programming, partly for gaming). It's strange that this prevents the random shutdown...but it's better than the graphics card being completely useless.

I ordered the machine back in August and received it in the middle of the same month, and have experienced the issue in numerous games, and on XP 32-bit, XP Professional x64 Edition and Server 2003 x64. It's truly unfortunate that Lenovo seems to yet come up with a fix, which is probably attributable to them not knowing what the problem is. I think there was a December BIOS update whose update notes included a blurb about fixing issues with nVIDIA GPUs...this didn't fix my issue. Hopefully when I get around to it the motherboard swap will take care of things, and I can use the full 4 GB of RAM I have.

Uodnelome, it sounds like Lenovo has found the cause and possible fix. They just have not released it yet. If you visit the Lenovo forum there's a big post about this issue and we are just waiting to find out what the fix is.

I thought it was a hardware issue though? Is it possible to correct it with a software fix? I am just curious as I haven't been following the issue too closely recently.

They did not specify what type of fix it is . It sounds like a hardware fix, but they haven't said yet.

It's one of the complaints people in Lenovo forums have. People don't know why Lenovo won't at least let them know what type of fix it is and if it's safe to buy a machine now.

Yes, this is a hardware issue, but still it requires a release of sorts: a release of info to the public about a solution, a release of info to dealers and to Lenovo's own tech service depots so that they know how to fix it if you have the problem.

So, lo and behold, today Lenovo has made an official announcement, both on its forums and its official website.
