Has anyone tried installing a 160gb 7200rpm hard drive in their t61? I think only seagate sells them. Should it run without any problems?

Any 2.5" SATA hard drive will work just fine. The current top performer and largest 7500RPM hard drive is the 200 GB "Hitachi 7K200".

Yeah, that is a constant typo I make. I guess my subconscious is insisting on a nicely rounded number (to the nearest 500 anyway).

Then it would still be 7000, not 7500 ;)

I have the exact drive you are referring to in my T61 right now. It is noticeably louder, but performance IS better. Keep in mind though, if you don't plan on running HD-intensive software, you won't notice the difference and you'll be tolerating the extra noise for no reason.

I am kinda worried about the sound. Is it loud enough to make it noticeable in a university room? (I guess not just making sure). Did you notice a big change in the battery life too?

No, not by a long shot. But if you are alone, you'll notice it.

I have the 160GB Seagate drive in my R60. Mine's very cool and quite with good performance. From what I've gathered the Hitachi offers a bit better performance, but they're more expensive. The Seagates are cheap on Dell's site right now.
