I'm deciding between the two, I've looked around on the forums.

Any places I can find stats loosely comparing the two?

    Thanks,
    T

Anyone know which brand and model is used if you pick the 160GB, 7200RPM drive? I'm wondering how much faster it would be than the Hitachi 5400RPM 160GB drive.

What for will you use your machine?
160GB 5400 = of course more capacity and slower speed, but also less heat and longer battery life.
100GB 7200 = less capacity and more speed, but also more heat (perhaps more noise also) and shorter battery life.

    Ferossan.

There are some problems with your assessment.

    1. The 160GB 5400 is faster than the 100GB 7200, check link above.
    2. Heat is not necessarily more. If so, prove it. Not by "logic".
    3. Efficiency of drives may cause the 7200 to use less energy than the 5400.

    1. Seems you are right.
    2. My logic says that something that rotate faster must be moved and holded for something. So there is some "contact" that if it faster will generate more heat.
    3. The same logic of Nº2 says that to move something faster is needed more energy. The drives efficiency could help, ... so much? Can you prove it in this case?

Yeah, I could be wrong any way.

If you use Vista then 100GB is going to be tight unless you turn off some features like system restore.

OP, why not just go for the 160GB, 7200RPM drive? It only costs $50 more than the standard drive as an upgrade with the current discounts...
