Is there any reason why I can't swap out the 120 GB SATA HD for a 160 GB SATA on my z61m? Will the new drive be recognized as a 160gb drive.

The laptop arrived with a 120GB Toshiba HD. I would upgrade to a 160 GB disk of the same series

I dont see a reason why a 160 GB wouldn't be recognized. I suggest that you get the Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160 GB HDD. It uses Perpendicular Recording and in most cases, has the same performance of a 7200 RPM HDD without the added heat / power usage.

You should be able to swap the HDs with no issues.

    Thanks to everyone

The Seagate Momentus seems to have a problem with disappearing MBR's. Maybe I ought to give it awhile.
