Hi, I do software programming a lot and I often move around.

Which screen resolution is ideal for a programmer?

    HD+: 1600x900
    FHD:1920x1080

My current T500 has 1680x1050, which I feel is perfect.

    Thanks.

if you feel that the WSXGA+ is perfect then HD+ is the closet match for you.

I'd go with FHD. I buy most of my laptops used. It'll make a difference if you go to resell it.

    FHD.

Typing code (left), while reading API reference / code samples (right).

I would prefer the MOST pixels when I do code... but when I do serious work, I just hook up the external monitor.

    FHD FTW!

If you think 1680*1050 is perfect, then you'd probably be better served by HD+, but if vertical resolution is important to you, then FHD would be a better choice since you're moving from 16:10 to 16:9.

Thanks for your input. What do you mean by "vertical resolution is important to you"?

I care about resolution because I do programming and often open a few windows at the same time.

    Best.

900 versus 1080. Considering you are coming from 1050, can you handle 900?

    Yeah what he said ^

The new laptops are wider so you lose vertical real-estate. To me at least computer programming is easier with more vertical resolution (being able to see more lines of code and what not, don't need all the extra stuff on the sides). so I think if you're used to 1050 on the vertical you might be better off with FHD (to get at least 1080 vertical res). If you don't care how many lines of code you can see without scrolling and 1680*1050 is perfect for you then consider going with HD+.
