    Hi,

I know it looks like the T61 is delayed, but does anyone own one with the 140m video card?

I'm wondering how much louder it will be than the integrated graphics? I can get the T61 /w 140m very easily here in Canada, but not with the x3100 for some reason (it's a very bad deal price-wise).

I have a nc8430 right now with an ATI x1600 and the fan is really loud all the time. I'd like to avoid this so my preference goes to integrated graphics, however I'm curious to see if anyone has any comments/experience regarding the NVidia card and noise/temperature.

    Thank you,
    d.

Besides the fan how do you like the nc8430? You also ask a good question because I have a 6600 and the fan is always going. I'm also curious about the heat and noise of the 140m.

dedicated graphics adding heat and reduce battery life, take it only if absolutely necessary for your work. How noisy is fan - nobody here actually got their T61 yet :(
Yes, in Canada there only good deal on system 766416U - just $1499 through visaperks. With integrated graphics - you can buy in US for under 1K, but there are lots of strings attached :(

The nc8430 is a pretty solid machine with a very good keyboard (close to the ThinkPad's, better than the budget Lenovos) and a beefy video card. The only drawbacks for me have been 1) noise and 2) Linux performance. The fan is always on, and while it's not as loud as a desktop machine, it's very noticeable in a quiet room like, let's say, my small living room. Linux support for the hardware is almost complete (haven't tried the fingerprint reader), but the ATI drivers are far from ideal, and the power management is flaky, resulting in about 1 hour worse battery life than XP. Also, it's a 15.4" laptop, and I think I prefer smaller computers, which is the third reason why I want to replace it. Small annoyances, really, but given the amount of time we spend on these machines, it pays to be picky :)

Anyone else has experience with the Nvidia 140m?

    Thanks!
    d.

Let me listen - nope, all I can hear is the angry customers that didn't get their orders. Ignore 'em.

from what i've read on the nvidia website, it's passively cooled
so it shouldn't make it too much louder

I've never even heard the fan on my T61, I can definitely feel it however. It is a very quiet machine, and yes I have the NVIDIA graphics.

From the review of the T61 (the chinese one) I'm pretty sure if you look at the internal pictures it shares a single fan with the CPU and.. northbridge? The pictures show three elements hooked up to one fan. So it's at least the GPU and CPU hooked up to the same heatpipe, so I'm pretty sure it's not passively cooled.
