My friend used my R61 when I wasn't around and he managed to bend 2 of the copper wires inside my Ethernet port (breaking off 1 wire). Obviously, it no longer works. Where can I send my laptop to get this repaired? It's still under warranty but since this is physical damage, I doubt warranty would cover for this. I am currently on wireless but I rely quite a bit on LAN as well. What can I do about this?

    -Thank you

I think you best bet wound be to get pcmia or expresscard wired nic

The jack is solder right to mainboard

and you ether need company with smd solder skills or new mainboard

and since laptop is warrenty changeing it from 3 party company wound most like void you warrenty

you cound send back ibm tell them network card not work right or cound just ask them what it wound cost to fix they problay go say need new mainboard since most company do not do broad leval repair

Thank you for the quick response. I don't think I would like to go for any expresscard/PCMCIA, etc.

I think I'll look into getting an other NIC soldered. Any idea on how much it would cost?

Just give lenovo a call and ask for a price estimate since it's most likely not covered under warranty. It should at least give you a general idea of the cost.

What is your specific R61 model number? Depending on the configuration replacing the board might not be THAT expensive.

i would contact lenovo and tell them your nic isnt working. you have nothing to lose. you may especially make out well if they have a local service center near you where you can talk to someone.

i have soldered dozens of dc power jacks to back on mainboards for laptops but never a nic. if you dont want to tie up the expresscard slot then go with a usb nic adapter. they are very small and easy to carry.

    Old thread
    BUMP

Ok. So I still have yet to send the R61 in for repair. I managed to kind of repair one of the pins in the Ethernet. The Ethernet port light finally turned on and my networking started working, but only locally. My system refused to connect to the internet, though I could download at up to 8 mb/sec from other systems on my network. I formatted and installed vista and now all of a sudden I can access the internet and also have access to lan. There seem to be no problems anymore. I'm able to utilize all my internet bandwidth (10mbps) and everything without a problem. However I am clearly missing 1 pin and have 1 bent pin. How is it that this thing is still working normally? One thing interesting I noticed was that vista shows IPv4 connectivity but limited IPv6. Is this a result of the broken pins? Should I do anything about this?

    Thank You
