I've had a very difficult time finding performance data on the 1.8 inch 5400 RPM hard drives offered by lenovo for T4x0s. I think they are produced by Toshiba, because that's the only company online that describes 1.8 inch hard drive products. It seems everyone is happy with the speedy performance 1.8 inch SSDs offer, but I haven't heard anything about the 1.8 inch 5400 RPM drives. Toshiba gives these specifications on MKxx29GSG SATA 1.8-inch Series of Hard Disk Drives.

    Track-to-track Seek 15ms
    Average Seek Time 3ms
    Rotational Speed 5,400 RPM
    Average Latency 5.55ms
    Buffer Size 8MB

But I'm hoping to hear from actual T4x0s owners, how does the performance of the 1.8 hard drive compare to 2.5 inch 5400 RPM drives? Do the 1.8 inch drives suffer from higher latency compared to 2.5 inch drives, or does the small size actually reduce seek time? Thanks.

You've not heard from everyone. I've heard the 1.8" drives are below average performance wise, but I've not seen one myself. 3ms for the seek times is lower than 7200RPM drives, which seems unusual. 5400RPM drives are usually between 5-6ms for the seek times.

The SSD drive in the T410 is made by Samsung, not Toshiba.

I can tell you that from my experience, a 1.8-inch hard drive makes everything VERY slow to the point that it is simply impractical... You're just wasting time waiting and waiting and waiting.

However, if you swap it with a 1.8-inch SSD hard drive... :)
