I bought a HGST 1 TB HD for my T430 and I thought since it was the same brand it would fit... turns out the 1 TB drive seems to be too thick.

I'd like to keep my optical drive, so the caddy thing won't work.

Where can I find a 1 TB 7200rpm hard drive that is thin enough to fit?

OK, so maybe I need to consider having a separate drive in a caddy and use an external optical drive when it is needed.... anybody know of a good detailed write up on using a hard drive caddy to install a HD in the optical drive bay?

1TB 2.5", 9.5mm drives definitely exist. I think you can even get a 1TB hybrid drive at 9.5mm now.

Lenovo offers the 1TB SSHD as an option for the W540 RAID drive.

To the best of my knowledge, the only 1TB drive that will fit the T430s is the Western Digital 7mm slim drive, though it is only 5400RPM. I have this drive in my X220 and it fits quite well. If you're not using WWAN, you might want to consider the mSATA SSD, which will be quicker than any 7200RPM drive. You can use it to install the OS and keep a platter drive for storage, where speed is not as important.

    Derp, totally forgot about that.

That being said, along with all the other things said, if you're hardcore you can always get one of the 1TB 7mm SSDs(!)

I'll probably end up opting to replace the optical drive with a 1 TB in a caddy.

What's the best brand of caddy to get?
OR, will the no name caddy's on eBay work OK?
