I ordered my w510 with Intel QC Extreme i7-920XM with 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 (2 DIMM) which operates at 1066mhz(I think?).

    Now I am looking to buy this set of ram for upgrade, G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory

    Model
    Brand G.SKILL
    Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ
    Type 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM
    Tech Spec
    Capacity 8GB (2 x 4GB)
    Speed DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
    Cas Latency 9
    Timing 9-9-9-24
    Voltage 1.5V
    ECC No
    Buffered/Registered Unbuffered
    Multi-channel Kit Dual Channel Kit

    for $391.49CAD

Is it necessary? How much improvements will I see by making the upgrade? Is it worth the money?

What are you using your notebook for? The speed difference will make absolutely no difference but some applications such as VMWare and CAD work might be able to utilize up to 8GB of memory. Generally, unused memory is wasted memory and hence will not yield any performance benefit either.

You'll see some benefits if you're using programs such as Photoshop and some encoding/video editing software, though the latter few will really see benefits more from the CPU. No games really will take advantage of more than 4GB.

the W510 has four memory slots.   why not just add one or two more 2GB PC3-8500 modules if your apps run out of memory?   for what you're doing, you'll never notice the difference between 1066MHz and 1333MHz modules.   adding PC3-8500 modules would be much more cost effective.
