    i have a sony dvd+-rw dw-q58a in a m140

when i try to rip a dvd with a program called dvd decrypter i can only achieve a read rate of x 1.1 why is it that it is going so slow? i can get at least a read rate of x 4.0 on my desktop.

first of all you should be using DVD FAB Decrypter which an actively updated app and not a dead program like dvd decrypter. Let me know how that works.

You can also try updating your drives firmware.

ok well ill try that but i also was loading some movies that i had burn to a dvd cd the file size was 3.6gb and by just dragging and droping the file into the folder i wanted it said that it would take 45 min to complete. **** me old ass dvd drive on my desktop goes faster than that, i even tested it and it was 15 min so somethink is wrong. i got a 250gb external hd and i can transfer 17gb from a usb 2.0 cable to it in about 20 min.

ok i have done some more testing and i have a 16x sony dvd external drive that is hooked up to my computer by a usb 2.0 cable. i can rip a dvd and get read rates of up to 6.0x. now i understand that the external drive has a faster read rate but why is it that i can read data quicker through a usb 2.0 cable than i can on my internal dvd drive, doesnt that seem odd. also when it comes to cpu usage im maxing out the 1.73 p-m when just riping a dvd (not encoding but JUST ripping the data off it) on the interanl drive and when i use the external drive im hovering at about 10-25% cpu usage and it doesnt even clock up to 1.73, it says at 800 mhz.

when using the external dvd drive and ripping a dvd i can also run media player, firefox, encode a dvd, and my ram usage only goes up to 410mb and everything run smooth and doesnt lockup. howerver if i use the internal dvd player to rip a dvd and that is it the systme lags and is not that responsive.

i have already uninstalled the dvd drives and reinstalled them and that did nothing.

i have used nero to find out what the bust rate is on the transfer and i am only getting 2mb/s that is VERY low and should be much higher, again what give? on my external drive i can get 21mb/s and thats through a usb cable.

i only have 512 ram(256x2) could that be a reason for the slow read rates? is so them why is it then that the external goes faster though?

It's the drive. My sony drive in my i9300 only burns at 4x on any dvd media. If you talk to Dell about it, they say that a reformat of the hard drive will fix it but that is not the problem.

ok well i spent 2 hrs on the phone will dell tech service and they made me do a diagnostic test and it said the drive was fine and so on. i told them everything that the drvie was doing and that i read on the dell forum that people have said that the drive is slow and that they got sent a replacement that was a NEC drive and it was much better. they told me that because the drive tested fine that it was operating within there specs ( at 2mb/s  ) so they would not send me ****. needless to say i was not a happy camper. well i started doing some searching at notebookforum.com and found more cases off people that are having similar problems as me and found that half got new drives and half updated the firmware. well i found the firmware and updated it and OMG it is operating at the speeds it should now, im getting 23mb/s and it burns and rip SO much faster. now why is it that dell could not tell me to do this and on my own i had to figure this out (although it was a good learning lesson). i feel sorry for people that just depend on dell for tech help cause they would screwed if they were in my case.

here is the site in case anyone else searches for this and needs the update

I'm pretty sure I told you to update the firmware AND provided the correct links.

Why would you ask a question and not take the given advice in the first place. I just don't understand.

Hmm, I'm gonna take a stab in the dark on this one... Perhaps he worked this out on his own during the 13 hours between his previous post, where he pretty much concluded that noone knew, and your posting with the solution.

If this is the case, at least the guy had the decency to post back to say he had found a solution... something many people don't bother to do when they work something out themselves.

Take a deep breath and reread the thread. :)

Interesting theory...it's certainly a possibility; but who knows since he didn't say either way.

    Cool avatar, BTW.

    merky works,
I am having the same issues with the same box that you have. Which Firmware did you use? And what media are you using now? Thanks.
