Need them or not, you can't get rid of them, they are not softwares. :p

Intel® 64 Architecture - to run 64-bit OS and related stuff.

Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® Technology - Automatically switches the clock speed according to usage of your CPU to preserve battery life, available or most notebook CPUs.

Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology - multiple threads per core. see below for details...

Basically it means the T6400 has fewer features than the P8400. In general, I'd go for the P8400 anyways, but you probably don't need any of these extra features. There's a thread about Virtualization below, and I think the other two differences are just hardware security options?

The P series will offer greater battery life. If the machine is constantly under light load, it won't be much, though. The T6400 is going to be a bit slower than the P8400 as well, but you won't be able to tell the difference if you're just doing internet and office work.

I'm fairly certain you can run VMWare without VT, but from what I gather, the VT will give you a performance boost. Of course, I think it is absolutely necessary for that Win 7 feature.

Lay out should be similar, but the actually keyboard itself is very different. If you can try one at a shop, I would recommend it.
